  • What does it mean...

What does it mean, do you suppose, when you get turned down for a job you really want and would (in your opinion) be perfect for, under these conditions:

There were only two candidates, including yourself.

The other candidate was asking for 10K more per year than you asked for.

The other candidate had 1/2 the formal education that you have.

The other candidate had 1/2 the on-job experience that you had.

You were instrumental in getting the other candidate his first job, long-long ago.

You trained the other candidate years ago, teaching him everything you know.

I swear, the only thing I can think of is that I have some kind of fundamental personality flaw that I'm not seeing. Maybe I'm possessed? Maybe I'm going into a catatonic state during interviews, and speaking in tongues?

    I feel like crap.

Is the other candidate a different race or gender than you? In (or previously in) the military? That kind of thing? Maybe, it really just means that you weren't supposed to have that job. Maybe your place is somewhere else, and you just haven't been shown that yet. It will all work out man, don't sweat it.

          Affimative action policy maybe.....?

          Was the other applicant related....?

The other guy/person/whatever hangs out outside of work in some way or another with the guy/person/whatever doing the hiring...?

The other guy is a much better at bull****ting....?

Did the other person leave the interview wiping his chin with a kleenex...?

with those differences I doubt affirmitive action would have kicked in, $10k a year is a decent difference. Unless there had been a lawsuit called on them or something recently.

I think its that they know someone... Just small example, I know and worked side by side with the district manager, my girlfriend needed a job at another location, asked district manager, she said no problem. My girlfriend got hired and was getting paid more then any of the people at that location, and they all had more experience, and worked that location longer.

Could it be charisma (sp?). I know alot of people that go really far with little qualifications. Sometimes a little leadership & self-motivation are better than any book learn'n.

                    Maybe they dislike Alien lovers?

Racists to people with green blood??

I dunno man... I've been through this a couple times recently... supervisor positions.

I chalk it up to gaining experience from interviews.... and I ask them what I might have been able to do differently

Bleh. Well, it is a bit more complicated, and everyone who said "knows somebody" is probably right.

You see, both of us (myself and the other candidate) have a mutual friend who works at this place. I don't hang out with the guy that often, but the other candidate does.

The thing that confuses me tho, is that this friend is the person who asked me to apply in the first place. Then, when I learned more about the job, and how great it would be, I started to get excited and hopeful about it.

I don't get why he would ask me to apply, knowing that I really wanted a new and better job, knowing that I'd have to take time off from my current job to do it, if he had planned on suggesting the other candidate over me. If that's what happened.

That sucks... well... maybe you can get back at the guy who got hired, with a little fist to the face action.

It's more of a stab in the back, I'd think, than anything else.

It could be any of the other reasons, but I think the reason it irks you so much is because you trained this guy in, and now he's getting a higher rank.

It's not right, and it never will be.

                            Good luck, dude.
