• What to do about roomates from hell (legal ideas, or revenge, either works)

Hey there, I moved to long beach not to long ago for school. Due to some altercations with campus security I was forced to move off campus into a two bedroom apartment a few miles from campus.

At the time there was another couple that needed a place to live (they were also forced off campus)

My girlfriend and I searched for about three days before coming across the place, the other roomies who we will call rose and steve or in short "morons", did not even lift a finger to find a place, they didnt evenmake any phone calls.

Well despite the warnings in my head we showed the the apatrment and we eneded up moving in together. Everything went fine for the first month or so, but then the ish hit the fan.

AS it turns out Rose and Steve were late for their first months rent and bills, as well as third months bills and this last months bills.

Not only that but I just about have to go outside and stand there and watch them so that they dont "mistake" our food for theirs. We left for vacation back home to sacramento and were gone a total of 4 days, in that time they managed to east 35 dollars worth of our food and reduce our supply to almost nothing. Their answer "Well steve was sick" ... so sick he went to a slipknot concert and couldnt afford the bills.

I also feel as if I am a fifty year old staying with a bunch of teenagers, they invite friends over for parties without telling, asking, or even letting us know. Walked out in my boxers last night to 10 people in the apartment, three of which I knew. The music gets rediculously loud and I have to come outside and remind them that it is 2 am and that there is a family with three kids upstairs.

What can I do, from what I hear even though they do not have a cosign (my father is the only cosign, and hes cosigned for me) I cannot forcefully make them leave. Any of you guys perhaps a little bit more knowledgable about this sort of thing think you can help me?

Its really getting bad, when I asked steve for the money he basicaly rolled his eyes and walked away while we talked to his girlfriend, he got it to us although three weeks late (and three days before the power was going to go poof) what can I do?

If your name/your dad's name is on the lease, and their's isn't tell them to leave. Give them a 30 day notice, out of curtesy. If they won't leave, I think you can call the police and they will remove them. They will probably be pissed but oh well. They might stiff you on rent/bills, just keep all recipts/bills, and if they don't payup take them to court, they will even garnish thier wages if they have too.

Or just beat the mmoney out of him

Also my GF had another roommate that always ate her food, and GF was on a super limited budget (i sometimes had to buy her food)

So anyways, when GF went shopping she'd bring back groceries and took a black sharpie pen, and put huge X's on everything that was her's.

Roommate tried eating her food still but GF would take wrapper/box whatever the food came in, and throw it on her bed with note "please replace or add to rent" <----It was my idea :D

even if their names arnt on the lease, they have established residency since they've been there for 30 days, therefor no matter what you do, you've got to give them 30 days notice, the police cannot remove them. I would talk to either the landlord or a lawyer and ask them what your options are. dont do somthing based on what anyone here says w/o double checking to make sure its accurate

yeah, I have been really careful as to not let them in on this for now. I dont want them to get mad, trash the apartment and get my dads credit effed up.

And I wouldnt put it past them either....

They have been doing (well steve has) things on purpose to disrespect/piss me off lately. The reason why hes mad... get this: I asked them to do their part in washing their own dishes (that we bought) and taking out their trash.. yeah their mad about that I guess, so I deserve to have a migraine daily.

As to the lease, they are on it, but they lack a cosigner. There was supposed to be a cosign for both of us, but they let us in with just mine.

Technically, you would think the cosigner would have the ultimate judgement as to whether or not a tenant can stay. I guess that ill have to ask a lawyer as to what I can actually do before I say anything to them.

I just cant stand their stupidity anymore, I never thought I was especially responsible for a 22 year old, but these two act like dislexic children. Worst part is it isnt their first time in an apartment, you would think they could get their bills paid on time (without us telling them.... which is another reason they blamed us for them not paying bills..)

If they are on the lease I believe they either have to be evicted/kicked out by the landlord. The co-signer is just as extra precationary by landlord to be paid on an overdue rent.

Really you should reread your lease, it is in writting whatever it says pretty much goes.

I'd recomend just talking to your landlord, you and the "morons" are both legal responsible to the length of the lease. Only the landlord can let you out of that. Or suggest renting another one of his units by yourself.

But yeah like 95fbirdkid said it wouldn't hurt to talk to a lawyer too.

ill have to call the landlords again, maybe arange a meeting or something. A friend of mine from home wants to move down here, and I would much rather have him as a roomate.

I would speak with the landlord and explain the situation and see if it is possible to transfer apartments so that you don't end up homeless because of them. Chances are that they are not going anywhere...no matter what, unless they are removed by law enforcement.

If you are able to transfer, you might have to pay a little more for the first month (prorated rent, transfer fee), but it'll be worth it in the long run. When I transfered from a 3BR to a 2BR, I went from $1000 ---> $850 and had to pay a $200 transfer fee and ended up with a total of $1029 for my rent that month, but now, I am able to stash away that extra $150.

Good Luck, let us know what happens.

I had a roomate that used to steal my food. She would still a box of Velveeta Shells and Cheese(the good stuff), and say, I am sorry you can have the rest of my chip's ahoy, NO ***** MY SHELLS AND CHEESE WERE $2.36, your chips ahot was like $1.39, and I am only getting half of it.

So I hid my stealable food in my room kept it locked, then when she was gone me and my girlfriend had dirty sex in her bed and I money shotted on her pillow and never told her.

***** also owed me $60 for like 8 months.

Talk to the landlord about the penalty for breaking the lease & moving out. It may be a matter of paying rent for a month or two to give them a chance to sublet.

Things will only get worse if you try to deal with the situation & get them booted. You're best bet is to run for the hills while you can & don't get roomies at your next place.
