  • Automotive Training, what would you suggest?

I've been out of high school going on 4yrs now and I haven't really established myself in the world at all. I'm working a part time job and taking classes at a local community college but to be honest I'm having my doubts about going back to a university (I've been to 2 in 3 years...) All I really want to do is find a career that matches my interests... cars! So I'm thinking about going to a technical school of some sort but I'm not sure where to go or what to look for. I can go to school for a year and get an ASE license as either a technician or a diagnostic guy. I've also looked into Licoln Tech and UTI but neither have a campus in Va that I'm aware of.

I do want to be more than just a mechanic at some local shop but I do realise I will probably end up doing just that for a while. I do have high hopes though, perhaps working with a professional race team or pit crew one day. So what do you guys think?

      Tennesee Auto Diesel School

Know many people who went there, and loved it..

full extent of graduating is 1 year and 9 months....well worth it.

They got to work on some stuff for Nascar here.. it's great you learn just about everything in the automotive industry.

I don't think their is a tech school is VA. You are either going to have to go to MD or NC as andy said. You could go farther but it's not worth it when you have 2 schools that a somewhat close to you.

I think there might be something in the VaBeach area. I couldnt tell you what it's called for the life of me. But ran into a random friend a few years back that said he was attending a tech school somewhere in the Va Beach area. But I really dont know what it was. UTI does have one of their school just around the corner in NC though. You may need to travel a bit.

I'm going into Ford's ASSET program here in Tampa when it starts in August.

Do a search for schools that offer the ASSET, or GM's ASEP (much less popular than ASSET) or Chrysler's CAP program if you're interested in getting fully trained. What I like about it is that I go to school f/t for 9 weeks, then the next 9weeks is 40hours a week at the dealer that sponsors you.

I found out that ATI, Advanced Technical Institute is in Va Beach! They have automotive, diesel, and high performance programs. I'll have to look into tuition prices and such, but so far it looks sweet!

                  good school
but my cousin just graduated out of there (NADC -- Nashville Auto Diesel College) and said the high performance course is replacing all the v8's they have laying around with a 4 cylinder "import tuner" class, which def brings down their credit with me a bit
other than that though, great school
