Actually, Big Tymer, that is Ammonia and Bleach you are thinking of, which you REALLY don't want to mix. Overall, various products might be formed, none of which are all that enjoyable.

Monochloramines (NH2Cl), dichloramines (NHCl2), and hydrazine (N2H4) are the products that are formed. All of these products are lung/throat irritants in high enough concentrations, and can be very toxic. The chloramines, once entering the throat, react with fluids and create hydrochloric acid, ammonia, and oxygen free radicals, all of which can damage cells. In essence, the ammonia poisons the cells in your body. The acid donates a proton to the molecules in your body, thereby reacting with them and making them change into something new. Most people call this melting. The oxygen free radicals, though, are perhaps the worst. They are unstable oxygen atoms which have an almost full outer valence shell. They require an additional electron to complete their shell so that they will be in a more stable configuration. To do this, they rip an electron away from whatever they come in contact with, namely your lung cells, and cause severe damage. Overall, this translates into the swelling of the lungs and throat as they fill up with fluids and inflame from the damage.
As for hydrazine, the case is worse. Hydrazine is better known than the chloramines, namely because hydrazine can be used for fuel. It is incredibly flammable, and can ignite, even without the presence of an open flame. Given that it doesn't ignite, the inhalation alone is quite bad. It can cause severe pain, inflamation, shortness of breath, headaches, nausea, coughing, and convulsions. Plus, hydrazine can be absorbed into the skin, and can cause severe chemical burns.

So, needless to say. Mixing ammonia and bleach is a bad thing, but Bleach and chlorine is just fine. Oh, and one last thing. Chlorine gas (Cl2), is NOT liberated from the mixing of these two chemicals, as is the common myth. Any chlorine gas that is created would be in such a negligant amount that it would not pose any threat.

      -Justin

      P.S. Chemisty is fun!

So ethylene glycol and bleach (w/ clorine) wouldnt be a problem chemically?

BTW, I would love to have a container of hydrazine. Don't they use that for RCS thrusters?

          bleach is chlorine basically.

Just add a bit of bleach - before you add take your solution to a nearby pool and ask them to do a chlorine test on it - all you need is about 5-6 ppm to assure you will not have any algae growth

add a bit of bleach once a week w/ distilled water and you should be fine
