  • Question/Survey for members

So.. After doing this and pondering all the things that go with it and can go in, I started thinking (yeah.. keep the comments down) about what people think about other forums. What they like about them, dislike about them. What they use them for, etc.

I know I keep up with a few forums myself. I know admins on different boards. And know all the interesting little stuff that goes with them.

How do we stack up with them? Where can we improve? What is working, and not change it?

Give me suggestions, comments, links to forums you favor to, just don't tell me James is a boob... I already know that :poke: :D

    Re: Question/Survey for members

Well... I have been known to view a message board or two in my day.

    Likes about other boards...
The ability to use the screenname MustangEater82 or variants of it. ;)

-Not sure if we have the traffic for this but...
    Cars for sale/wanted section
    Parts for sale/wanted section
Other non-car stuff for sale section

-PMs(looks to be an option here)
-Ability to post pics(can be very useful in tech sections for sure)
-I am digging podcasts over at CZ28.com right now, but understandable not to be on every board. Just cool to here talk radio but pertain to messageboard/fbody life in a way. But I understand that being alot of work.

    Dislikes...
    Sig pics
    Allowing excessively long sigs.

IMO, I think some of the other boards are too flashy with way too many pics on each thread. Fbodyv6.com for example, if you read some of their stuff, there is way too much crap and you have to filter through it all just to find the text of the thread. Small avatars are great, but huge pictures in your sig is way over the top.

I hope you will eventually let us show our sigs again. That was very helpful to find out what people have done to their cars and what kind of car they have without having to ask.

Some suggestions i like from the other boards I visit.

          Avatars
          Posting pics
          More smilies
          PMs
I've grown to like sig pics. But they should be kept small. no bigger then 200x600

Also, I noticed attaching files hasnt been disabled yet. I know it can become a huge way to take up space on the server, so if you decide to disable it, which I wouldn't blame you for doing it. You should think about leaving them on for tech sections. I can't tell you how annoying it is to search for hours looking for a diagram. And when you finally find it, the link is dead.

That's all I can think of right now, but if I have any more suggestions, I'll post em up.

Question: It's OK, we're here for you. Don't fear change, jsut suck it up & press on like the rest of us.

camaro_speedemon: now see, if you had your own website you do ANYTHING you wanted. Oh, wait.............. :p

anyway, for a look at some different skins for vBulliten, checkout http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/ and http://www.motorsportconnect.com/bbs/home.php

I do like the way this default post edit looks/works. I'm nuetral on sig pics, as I can live with & without them, but will use if available. Yeah, I'm, easy. I've also seen on some boards that you could choose how the board looked. That may be an option in the future once all the bugs are worked and server is OK w/the load. I do like the ability to post pics in all the forums, even better than as attachments. I wonder if there is an option for those dial-uppers to prefer links to teh pics (attachments) for bettter speed. Maybe for sig pics/brag sheets, have a link that opens to a pop-up w/their sig pic & what they have.

i would like to see some sigs. it makes it easier to get to know members i think, as weird as that sounds. it gives an aspect other than just a screen name, makes each person an individual :p no bigger than the one that viper posted.

well, you cant change some of the people that post, its impossible on other forums the crowd is a little older, I guess that just makes everything flow better...I did like the name/avatar/all info being above your post not to the side of it, that way you wouldnt even need sigs, cadillacforums.com uses the same board but keeps it how we had it for a little bit...I kinda like that all info is up there, they still allow sigs but nobody really uses them. I think thats the only thing I'd like changed.

-I really really like the idea of PM's being open for everyone. I dont know whether that would be possible or not.

-Sig pictures for everyone are nice if they are kept to a very small size, but I still dont know about that one.

Speedeamon, what do you mean posting pictures? We can:

                          Re: Question/Survey for members

I'd like to see the homepage get upgraded and maybe add some dynamic content. Sig images I kind of like because it helps identify members easily, but there does need to be a strict limit on size. PMs I have never seen the need for. Anything you need to talk about that is technical should be discussed on the forum so it is recorded and is searchable and anything else such as selling things can easily be handled through email.

                            Re: Question/Survey for members

Personally, I'm not at all a fan of vBulletin. I much prefer SMF to vB, but I can live with it.

Nor do I like sig pictures. All they end up doing is making the forum more cluttered.

PMs, pictures, and file attachments are all wonderful. Hopefully the server won't have any problems supporting them.

Even if this is the stock theme for vB, I think it looks pretty good.

I also like how the stickies are seperated from the regular posts now. Hopefully more people will see them (yeah, right).

The extra features coming into the forum in the future should be really cool!

Overall, I'm very happy with the upgrade and I think it was worth the painful week we had to go without the board. :p

                            Besides that....James is a boob. :D
