You put it in "park." Then you turn the steering wheel to like 180* both way and you notice that the RPM jumps around. Since mine has a SC my RPM went crazy on me this morning. It was going from 900 to 2500 RPM. I thought it would never settle down. Then it went to 400 RPM, the engine felt like it was going to die. Then all the way to 3200 RPM. I put it in "Drive" and RPM settled at 900 RPM.
I just don't understand how a steering wheel is related to this. Can someone explain, please.
mine just drops rpm's. i guess its just the power steering getting put to work

It's the power steering pump robbing HP from the engine. It takes a lot to turn tires when your not moving, so the pump has to work harder. The engine isn't making much power at idle, so the computer senses a high load on the engine and not enough air getting in to support the load, so the IAC(Idle Air Controller) opens more to allow for more air in.
For an auto, my guess is when youre in park you have no load on the engine, so the IAC is only letting a small amount of air in to keep the engine running. The varying load of the PS pump causes the RPMs to vary. When you're in drive, the load is much greater, as the engine is trying to move the car, so the IAC allows much more air in. So the load from the PS pump isn't as big of a jump as it would be with no load.
