  • My 4.10s are going in tomorrow!!! Plus, look what else I’ve bought!!!

Since I got a job at Publix 1/28/06, I’ve bought:

    TA Performance Rear Cover Girdle
    TA Performance Stud Kit
    RATECH Complete Gear Installation Kit
4 Quarts of Red Line 75W90 Synthetic Gear Oil
SLP Zexel Torsen 4-Series Gear Adapter
Glasstek Fiberglass 4” Cowl Induction Hood (Bolt-on)
    Thunder Racing logo Windshield Banner
    Compaq Presario V4310NR Notebook PC

Plus $300 for my Gear Installation tomorrow!

I have an appointment tomorrow for my Gear Installation at 8am, and I don’t trust anyone with my car so I’m going to stay ALL day (because there’s a couple cars ahead of me) until they work on my car so I can watch them. The shop is called Next Level Performance, and has a great reputation, but I don’t trust anybody working on my car without me watching.

I’m going from 3.42s Open to 4.10s LSD!!!

Then 150 for TSP tune, and 300 for install? What else is needed? Install kit? How much?

I dont think our rear ends use synthetic oil!! they need the thick oil to grab.. Thats just what I remember from breaking 2 of my rear ends..

I spent 1100.00 on my last rebuilt rear for my V6..I got motive 4.10's, T/A, girdle, Eaton posi, moser axles..

I have never heard of not using synthetic in the rear.
I've used synthetic in it from day 1, but its like 85w-140

I used regular Advance oil 85w90 or 140 I forget.. And I used a bottle of GM friction modifier..

The way I was told is you want friction in the rear end.. Thats how the LSD works.. Synthetic doesnt allow as much friction as regular gear oil.. Thats why you are suppose to use a bottle of friction mod with the regular oil for LSD's..

I just got back from doing 2 heat cycles in my car, and have a question. Are the Motive 4.10s suppose to whine a lot while decelerating? It kind of sounds like I have a small jet plane behind me! LOL
NLP is an AWESOME shop, and I called the guy there and asked should they whine somewhat, and he said since there’re aftermarket 4.10s they tend to whine a little more. Is this ok, or should I go back? BTW, I took your advise Jeff, and told them to put in regular gear oil for now until the first 500 miles, then I’m switching to synthetic.

                          Total Cost:

                          Labor - $350
                          Gear Oil - $19.47
                          Brake Cleaner - $7.52 (???)
NAPA Pinion Oil Seal - $16.40 (I thought the RATECH Complete Gear Installation Kit came with this???)
                          Sales Tax - $27.54
Total- $420.93 (Seems a bit high???)

when i got mine done i had gear whine while decelrating, kinda annoying i took it back, they redid it, i now have gear whine a lil bit around 45-50 and 75 mph, and the rest of the time a SMALL whine but nothing too bad, just depends on how bad it is i guess, aftermarket gears i guess you have to be DAMN PERFECT for no gear whine!!

Any gears should be done perfect to not have whine I thought.
