Her work is suppose to pay for her gas. instead of the IRS standard .41/mile for gas and wear and tear, they only pay .18/mile which barely covers the gas. It's sucks but it atleast covers the gas and gives us a few extra bucks per pay period.
The way this system is suppose to work, is when gas prices go up, the rate per mile is suppose to go up. Well, her boss said they are only raising the rate to .19/mile and it's not going up anymore.
Lets do the math, 15.7 gallons * 14MPG = 219.8 miles per tank. Now we take the current gas price of $2.75/gallon * 15.7 = $43.175 to fill up the tank. Now you take that 219.8 miles * .19/mile = $41.762.
That means every tank of gas she uses for work, she loses $1.413 at current gas prices. She goes through atleast 6 tanks of gas per pay period. Now if gas goes up to 3/gallon here like it's predicted to, she looses $5.33 fo every tank of gas. Thats like $64 a month we lose just in gas for her to work. Figure in maintenance costs, averaged over a year, we lose $117/month . Considering she only brings home around 1000/month thats absolutely rediculous.
Edit: Wait, I forgot she gets around 20MPG with mixed city/hwy. Still, thats barely enough to cover maintenance costs and gas.
