  • Saving Gas method that works

I am tired of the high cost of driving so I have been using an old method of european tax drivers. when you are a familiar stop light that you know is a l o n g light...turn off your engine and save the gas.
I have been doing it for a few months and it has made a nice change in my gas usage. Why burn gas just to sit? Obviously not a viable method for short lights but turn off the engine when waiting for someone you are picking up plus long lights. Scew the Arabs, buy less of their
    gas.

im pretty sure this has been gone over b4 and that idle uses less gas, just enough to keep running. which begs the question how long do you mean, and doesnt every1 turn it off when there passenger isnt just running in to grab something or on long waits? plus there are alternate fuel cars, most ugly as hell thoh.

      wow
unless you have lights that stay red for 10min this way is a waste of gas, and a waste of your starter. but cool buddy, glad you think it works

You can plug in a SnapOn OBDII scanner and drop the RPMs to about 500 while idling then put 'em back up to stock when you're ready to take off. lol

          WOW!

dropping your rpms 2-3 hundred isnt much of a difference.

You will save more gas just by not gunning it at lights, signs, whatever and coming up to speed slowly on the freeway.

Our car's wern't meant for outstanding gas mileage, if you want to try to save gas stay off the pedal.

If you want outstanding gas mileage buy something that was designed for that and leave the f-body at home...

You are actually losing money in the long run, you are putting more wear and tear on your car by turning it off and starting it up.

im sure he didnt mean all the time, but turning ur car on and off constantly would just be worse on the "wear and tear" aspect and in turn ud just ruin ur starter like stated before. 98DC said it best though, and as for the 32 MPG... i guess his foot is really light cuz mine gets between 20-25 MPG maybe i need to change my fuel filter out or something lol. then again, there are a lot of college kids in this town with a butt load of mustangs trying to race me off the start, thats a joke.:burn:

It may or may not be a good idea on our cars.

But some new cars are designed to do exactly that. They kill the engine when they stop and restart it when the gas pedal is pressed down. Of course, they're designed in several ways to make this work well. Most, but not all, are hybrids.

Oh come on! Who cares about gas mileage?! This is AMERICA, wasting gas is what this country is all about :p I mean is it not the american dream to get a huge honkin great car (be it a boat, truck, suv, or muscle car) and get about 10mpg highway?! I know when i came here i was giddy with excitment over getting the chance to sit at the pump for 10 minutes every couple days.... well maybe not cuz i was nine at the time, but none the less :D.

it's not really the RPMs that eats gas, it's the load your engine is pulling. You'd have much better luck just putting your car in neutral... but even then... just keep it in gear.. it's not going to kill your gas. I doubt you'll notice a difference.
