yeaaa it's crazy what people find on ebay. anyways, back to the subject.. i think the dude deserved more than a $50 ticket. Taking the shortcut sometimes ain’t really worth gambling..

Time value of money. Given all the time he saved, it was definitely worth 150 bucks. :)

Re: I sooooo want one of these
i being a firefighter know that is extremely illegal and he deserved way more than a $50 ticket, and fyi that will only work in very large cities with fairly new traffic signals with the optical sensors instead of the ones burried under the road. and they must have had some wierd traffic signals because it is supposed to make ALL of the lights red and make a strobe somewhere in the intersection flash to give people in the intersection a warning.

If I had to say it, he beat the system. He found something that gave him an advantage without seriously causing a problem on the road. I actually thing the $50 ticket is extreme. You have to blame city engineers for adapting such a device to traffic signals. Can't blame the guy for finding the device, purchasing it legally, and using it, since there is no REAL law against using the device.1995 Pontiac Firebird

I will give you credit, bah, it is illegal to PURCHASE, but is it illegal to OWN? No. There are laws against purchasing such devices, because of reasons stated above, but not illegal to own. Similar to the HU card programmers for DirecTV dish owners could get. They were illegal to purchase within the US, but nothing could be said about owning one of them.1995 Pontiac Firebird

But then it negates the whole point of owning it.

He didn't put anyones life in danger or do anything extremley stupid. He "tampered with a traffic control device", so I think 50 bucks is reasonable. Its not enough to prevent it though :).
Then again, I suppose you could make the argument that what if he came upon an intersection at the same time as a firetruck or ambulance, switched the lights green on his side and cause a serious accident.
