hey, a boxer engine!!! I wonder if subaru will ever look into those??????
which engine is the best is truly subjective, adn depends on the application. size of the vehicle not withstanding, which would be more powerful, a v8 or straight 8 using teh same technology?
I still have a soft spot for the turbine

When I was at Galleria Ferrari they had a 1 cylinder engine that developed over 70bhp NA. Ovbiously this was just a prototype and too expensive, even for Ferrari.
I don't know how acurate that info is. Almost every standard dirtbike is a single cylinder and with minor modifications they can be well above 70 bhp and way more than 70tq.
Also, in reply to mcgodx, I don't know about that statment either. My bike is 6 tenths of a liter and it puts out roughly 110bhp. Much better ratio than the porche motor. But maybe they are just talking cars, I dunno.
There is fast, too fast, and way too fast. Way too fast is almost fast enough.

I bet just for cars. Bikes put out loads of power for their size.
Also, dirtbikes are two-stroke engines. They're more powerful, but have horrible emissions, and I think there are other reasons that keep them out of cars.
As a former owner of an 81 Mustang with an I6 engine (and all the mighty fury of its 90 horsepower), I'm all for V's!
Don't discount I6 on a sample space of 1. I had a 93 Wrangler with a 4.0 I6. Tons of torque and HP. At 140K miles, it was still strong and didn't leak a drop. Man, that was a GREAT motor. I beat the bejesus out of that thing.

Actually most dirtbikes are 4 strokes now. The technology is just getting rediculous on those things. The next engineering feat will be to make them so that the motors last more than 40k miles.

I believe the GT3 was the best power per liter for a production car. I saw it in auto week earlier, but I'm not positive on what it said exactley. That engine is awesome though. It basically has a variable intake manifold to create the best tq and hp at all rpms and it's actually rated atleast 10 hp lower than what it really is because it has a ram air system and there is no way to replicate that on a dyno.
My favorite is the flat type. Did you know the engine in the new 911 GT3 has the best power/liter ratio of any N/A production (piston) engine? That's what Porsche says, I haven't looked into it, but that's gotta say something.
115.2778 hp/L
The original Honda S2000 did 120 (240HP/2liters). For the American model they've detuned it to about 107 (236HP/2.2 liters)to get more torque. I believe the Japanese version still has the higher specific output.
Inline 4(!) $30,000(!!!), 1/3 the price of the Porsche
Not much going on, replaced my Kenwood double din stereo with a Pioneer double din, the Kenwood had problems. Then replaced my power inverter for my reverse...
