      So uhh...

      Insurance or no?
There is fast, too fast, and way too fast. Way too fast is almost fast enough.

he was driving it fast earlier, up in michigan it was dry for about 40 miles, then he hit the rain and traffic so he slowed down to 65. his traction control was on and he was on normal tires, not drag radials.

we went today to go look at the car but the place wouldnt let us into the yard because we needed an insurance agent with us or something... but the car was messed up pretty bad, the rims and tires made it out alright with a scuff on the front right rim (we were peeking through the fence) then we took a trip down the highway picking up pieces of the car as we went... depressing

I don't have traction control, but I have driven my car a considerable amount in the rain. I don't let the tires get too low on tread though. 65 is a safe speed, maybe he used too much throttle...first time I drove a Z28 I did a little fishtail on completely dry pavement without even meaning to...i can see where it would be much easier to lose control in the rain, you have to be able to handle the car. That's a nice car, that really sucks for your friend. I also have a friend that totalled his dream car shortly after he bought it.

ok guys, he said the car hydroplaned, not that the tires broke loose and he spun. hydroplaning has nothing to do w/ how he drove, w/ those wide of tires his car just floated over a wet spot in the road making him loose control. it doesnt matter how good of a driver you are, or weither you have t/c, or if you're going 75 or 30 (what they say is the slowest speed to hydroplane), if you're car doesnt want to cut through the water, you're screwed

The tire's ability to cut through water is directly related to speed though. The water channels can only move so much water per second. If the guy was speeding, he increased his risk of hydroplaning.

ok, maybe i wasnt clear, i didnt mean it had nothing to do w/ speed, what i ment was that it can happen at practically any speed.

I can totally understand his pain.. there is nothing worse than seeing your mangled baby on the inside of a fence. 45 minutes old, 45 years old. Its not as easy as buying another one, either. I ended up getting my 'vert completely paid off, plus 4k in my pocket for driving it for 6 months. I've been looking for 2 months since the accident and STILL can't find another one like it. The only thing worse is, just like your friend (probably) it wasn't your fault...and you had no control over it. Your baby was just gone. Good luck to him, I really hope he doesn't get ****ed around by the insurance company.

                        to add:

standing water is bad for hydroplaning, but if the water is moving across the road, your gonna get swept away anyhow.

Just because they were new does not mean they are good at moving water. If they were poor water tires, and there was a lot of standing water, sure I believe that. My point being, maybe at 39 MPH, you could have been fine. Higher speed increases the risk of hydroplaning.

Tires can only move water at so many gallons/sec. When that gets exceeded, you are likely to hydroplane. More speed means more water. More water means, well, more water. There are several other factors, but this is the major one.

so true, he was saying on the way to go see it that even if the insurance gives him all the money back for the car, hes not gonna buy another one. that was exactly how he wanted a camaro... exact rims, exact color, options, etc. i know you can buy all that stuff later on, but you cant replace the feeling of finding the perfect car
