  • 45 minutes and 70 miles later, Z28 finds the median

a friend of mine (the only one in my close group of friends without a camaro) finally caved and bought a REAL nice 2001 Z28, black, t-tops, powdercoated ZR-1 rims, leather, 50k miles, everything, for $14K. This thing was sharp. He was bringing it back from Kenosha, WI, when, literally 4 miles from home, (294-S before roosevelt road near oakbrook IL) he hydroplanes while changing lanes and puts this black beauty into the median, smashed the entire front end and snapped the door all the way to the front of the hood. needless to say the car is totalled, and I am one depressed kid. this was his dream car that he had been wanting to get for years, and finally found it, only to have this happen. hes a great guy and he totally deserved to own this car, and im sad that he never got to see it live out to its true potential.

These cars are easy to lose conrtol in the rain. Hope your buddy has insurance so he can get back on the road with something similar. Is he doing alright? That's what really matters in the end.

I'd hate to point blame at the victim here, but theres really only two reasons that this would happen: He was either driving too fast for the conditions, or his tires were a piece of ****. If it was the former then i really don't have a lot of sympathy for him. Sure its a huge shame, but if he was driving that fast then it shows a real lack of self control and responsibility, and prehaps he shouldn't have had a car that nice.
Now if it was the latter then i can sypathize with him a lot more. Tires are prehaps the most important part of a car, i mean its pretty much whats between you and the proverbial median, and a lot of people just don't realize that. One thing that seems often to be completely overlooked when buying a used car is what shape the tires are in, and in this case if your buddies tires were worn to the bone then that might have caused the sudden hydroplaning. Even if he thought he was travelling at a "safe" speed. Either way, its a real shame that such a nice car was destroyed.

simple fact, take care of your car and your car will take care of you... bad tires...brakes ect tisk tisk i think if i had just bought it though id have been driving extremely safe especially in the rain. to bad though, maybe he couldnt handle the power of the Z atleast no harm was done.

he was sitting on 315's in the rear and 275's up front, dont know what brand tire but im pretty sure the width alone didnt help with the hydroplaning... he was doing 65 (flow of traffic) and it was lightly raining

thats pretty much just for accelerating as far as i can tell, i've activated it plenty of times with my mom's GP, its not gonna help you really any when you start to fishtail or anything of that matter.

that sucks but that kinda stuff happens. it was a brand new car to him so i dont think he would know that it handled poorly in the rain. or he could have like nitto drag radials on it that are a great tire but do poorly in the rain.

to go 70 miles in 45 minuts you have to be going about 95mph. now I'm not saying he lied or anything, road conditions change and he could have slowed down then lost control few minuts later, but he was hauling *** to begin with.
