So, I couldn’t sleep last night (what’s new) and I decided to pop a DVD in my laptop and watch a movie in bed. All the lights were out in my apartment, and I’m watching the movie, and I notice something out of the corner of my eye, look towards my bedroom window, and see that the back yard light has activated. It’s motion sensitive.
So I suspect that an animal set it off, but I decide to take a look anyway, because it’s 4:15 AM and it would be very unusual for someone to be in my back yard at this time of morning. I walk out into the kitchen and move one of the slats in the blind covering my kitchen window, and I see a strange looking bald guy on my back stairs. I didn’t recognize him, but it was clear that he wasn’t one of the other three tenants and he wasn’t anyone I had seen around them in the past. His back is to me and he’s looking down over the staircase railing.
Now, this is disturbing for a few reasons. The first is that there are only three ways to access the back yard. One is through the two alleyways that run alongside the building to the sidewalk in front of the building, and these gates are almost always locked from the inside and impossible to open from the outside. We installed these locks three years ago when one of the four apartments in my building was broken into by a crack head. The second is through one of the four apartments, my own included, and the third would be to hop over a 4.5 foot fence, which would be easy enough but not something someone who is supposed to be in my yard would need to do.
I stood in the kitchen for a minute or so deciding what to do, and then I looked out the window again and saw the same person walking around, now in the back yard it’s self.
I decided to get dressed and go out the front door and check the alleyway doors. If one of them had been left open, I intended to enter the back yard the same way this person did and confront him there. I threw on my jacket and stuck my combat knife in the inside pocket, just in case.
I went out front, discovered that both gates were locked and secure, so unless the person entered this way and then locked the gate behind him, this wasn’t how he got in. I stood there for a minute thinking about it, and reasoned that if he had hopped over the back fence, the only way he would be able to exit is the driveway between my building and the next, so I walked over there and took a look and didn’t see anyone leaving.
I went back in the apartment, opened the back door and walked out on my deck, and saw nobody. I searched the back yard and found nobody. There were no lights on in any of the other tenants’ apartments and nobody exiting the aforementioned driveway. This person simply vanished, or found some place to hide that I had overlooked.
Needless to say, it was pretty disturbing. Something similar happened last winter, as well. The lady who lived below me at the time knocked on my door and told me that she heard someone in the back yard. I investigated and found footprints leading from the locked alleyway door, to her back door, and then to the foot of the stairs where they simply vanished. There were no footsteps leading up the snow covered stairs, and there were no footprints leading back to the alleyway gate.
Before you all start posting suggesting it was aliens, let’s put that one aside for the time being. :) Although I'm certainly not willing to rule out the possibility completely. ;)
