Not if you want to vote in the primary. I agree, two party politics stinks, but registering with a party at least allows you an extra vote for a candidate you might hate less.

Even though I am a registered republican, I vote for the lesser evil of all that is running. My point being, this is a difference in declaring a party and stricly voting party lines. Strickly voting party lines is ridiculous.

"Declaring yourself a "party" is ridiculous."

"What party? In other words, what color is your herd of sheep?"

Political parties are an essential part of democracy, in every democratic country. They are organizations of similarly minded people whose mission is to get their candidates elected.

If you want to be elected to something you're _far_ better off to be in a major political party. If you want people with a similar philosophy to yours to be elected, joining and supporting a party is a good way to go. If you want that and your personal philosophy is not mainstream (such as Libertarian) joining the party is essential.

If you're in a party, it's absolutely OK to differ with the party on particular issues. It's just not OK to support other candidates in elections. There is no heresy, but there is treason.

Example - John McCain. He's a Republican because he wants to be President. He takes different positions on many issues, but when it comes to election time, he's a good soldier.

Being an independent is a reasonable choice. But the price is that you give up some political power.
