You know this should have been a poll?

      Conservative Republican.

I'm a Rush Limbaugh kind of guy. I'm very much against liberalism and the rise of liberal media in the 90's and today.

Used to be a Democrat who voted for Clinton twice and for Gore for Presidence.

            Re: what party are you?

Libertarian Party here. Not to be confused with Liberal.

            From the FAQ:
            What is a Libertarian?
Libertarians believe that you have the right to live your life as you wish, without the government interfering -- as long as you don’t violate the rights of others. Politically, this means Libertarians favor rolling back the size and cost of government, and eliminating laws that stifle the economy and control people’s personal choices.

At one time I was there too. But I'm now convinced Libertarianism/Objectivism just won't work in the modern interdependent world, with high technology, easy transportation, and high speed communication.

The problem is that things are so interlinked today that what is "violating the rights of others" is often very indirect and not obvious. What you do affects me, even if it's not immediately obvious. And individuals tend to emphasize short term gains over long term good.

Example. Does it violate my rights if you use heroin? No. Are laws against hard drugs a good idea? I think yes, in spite of the fact that they "control people’s personal choices".

Does it violate my rights if you don't immunize your kids against polio? Does it violate my rights if you fill in wetlands on your property near New Orleans? Does it violate my rights if you farm your crops in such a way that the soil will erode if there's a drought? Etc.

At work today the rugged individualist cannot succeed unless they are an excellent "team player". I think the countries that will succeed in today's interlinked world will be those where the citizens pull together for the common good. That's _very_ hard to get done if everyone does their own thing. Government serves as a way to organize those efforts. Would a libertarian government fund long term research? Universities?

I'm liberal, but don't have a "party"... I guess I'm closest to Libertarian, although it will never work if every applied to the world.

Declaring yourself a "party" is ridiculous. Get the topic, decide for yourself. If other parties agree, it doesn't make you that. I bet none of you agree 100% with a certain party. Hell, the parties don't even agree 100% within.
