Ok guys and gals, I need some help here. I'm looking into getting a new truck, a new Chevy truck. I just bought a house two months ago and a truck is VERY convienent!
I have my 98 Firebird and an 89 F150. My fiancee drives a Cobalt. My fiancee can't drive my Firebird cuz its a stick, I've tried to teach her how to drive it, but she just can't get the hang of it. (so no posts saying "just teach her to drive it" haha)
My F150 is starting to nickel and dime me to death and I'm only getting 12 miles per gallon on a good day! Yeah, ouch! It's only a 300 Inline 6 and its getting that bad of mileage. I've even tuned it up recently. Plus none of the gauges work in the F150 except the speedometer, (talk about a major pain in the ***!) Basically the truck is starting to lose its reliability.
My dad worked for GM for thirty years and retired. I can get the GM employee discount whenever I want it (don't get excited guys, its only 5% but it's still better than nothing!) Getting a new truck would be so awesome since I'll be able to get rid of the F150, which sits almost all of the time except for its weekly drive to work. And I'll be able to get rid of the Firebird (boy- that was hard to type) which my fiancee can't even drive.
Whatcha guys think? I'd be getting the 4.8 Vortech V8 4x4. Anyone have any experience with this engine? Or am I better off with the V6? I do plan on buying a camper and stuff later on in just a couple of years (or months if money permits) My fiancee said she's all for me getting another Firebird later on too, she's cool about that stuff! :)

All opinions welcome and encouraged....WHAT SHOULD I DO??!! I need some advice! Keep the money-pit F150 and beautiful Firebird or just get a brand new Chevy Silverado!?

There's a new Silverado coming out this year. You might want to look into it before you decide on the current model.

Hmm, any websites for spy pics? I don't think Chevy.com has anything on the redesigned Silverado, I'll have to check it again.

Also- I checked insurance, and a brand new Silverado is only 30 dollars more every six months, so thats not bad at all.

just imagine the new Tahoe front end and you'll probably have it. ;)

I would say ditch the firebird and 89 ford. i would not recommend getting the v6 truck cause by experience of driving them at work, it is just not powerful enough. I could only imagine how under powered it would be with FWD, a camper or stuff in the back for moving or something. at another note, i have a 4.8L truck and it is defiantly powerful enough for what i use it for, moving and such, but I wonder if a 4.8L would make you happy since you want 4WD and a camper. I have never taking a 4.8L 4x4 off road, if thats what you want it for, but i think you should take that into consideration when you purchase one. I would defiantly look into the new truck coming out cause it very well could have the fuel management system (DOD). Also, don't make the mistake of buying 4WD if you are not going to take it off road much. I have seen people come into my shop with their truck on the trailer cause something happened to the transfer case and the say they never even used the 4WD. I'll say again, It may be cool to say 4x4 but you don't want the troubles of things breaking and added maintenance if your not going to use it.

You make a few good points BLLDOGG. When I say camper, I don't mean a BIG HONKIN camper! haha. I'm thinking around 16-18 footer. Just something the lady and I can take on vacation. I plan on buying a bass boat too one day. (Don't think I'm made of money people, because I'm not! i just save my money and manage it well)

I'm not looking for a huge v8 or anything, but I really don't think the v6 is gonna be enough for me. Which is why I like the smaller 4.8 v8 engine they offer. But ya know what BLLDOGG- I might have to check out the 07 model. Sounds pretty good to me!

I'm gonna go with four wheel drive for sure. I don't live right in the mountains anymore, but I do live about 40 minutes from work now, so winter will tricky for me. Plus going to my dads farm for a little off road action is always fun!

          Thanks for your $.02 BLLDOGG!

          Keep 'em coming!

If I had to give up my firebird and get a truck I would get a new chevy truck with the Duramax diesel engine. Good power and good fuel economy; plenty of performance upgrades available.
