Re: Calif. propose huge tax on SUV's

Its not our problem that the Mexican government has allowed one large oil company to become a monopoly down there. And to comment on Iran, why does the US have to be the worlds problem solvers? Our billions of dollars sent to Africa just get divided up by greedy unruley leaders. I'm hoping Israel will step up to Iran like it has before.

Incase anyone forgot, Alaska has a lot of oil.....

I don't agree with the tax.
At least most people buying a large SUV can afford a $2000 tax...

I think we should all have to drive mopeds or be heavily taxed. It's only fair.
I didn't say that I was trying to protect the cars I like. I think your moped comment is an exaggeration.

I just think that we need to be aware of we really need to drive around. If they want to tax just F-bodies then fine, I'll stop driving mine. But if this legistaion passes, then it shows that people do care about excess and the fat needs to be trimmed from these huge auto's, or people will pay through the teeth to drive them. And hopefully, that tax will go towards a tax break on more efficent cars in every aspect.

I'm pretty sure that PEMEX is Mexico's nationalized oil company. ;)

I think its a great idea...

only thing I say is if you are in a business that requires a truck, or own livestock you can be exempt from the law.

                **** soccer moms in SUVs.

Only thing I say is keep it with the "gas guzzler tax" If the SUV makes a way to be fuel efficient to a point, then its not taxed. If there really is a market for a large SUV crowd, then the car makers will make suvs that are expemt from the tax.

I always hated how certain sports cars got a gas guzzler tax while trucks and suvs were exempt.

I wasn't trying to put words into your mouth I was just trying to make you enpathize with those who are affected by the tax. It was an exaggeration on my part, but things like this can become a slippery slope. Multiple states look to california to copy laws like this. I don't think I should be punished by the government for choosing to drive what I want.

What if I own a large SUV for weekend use to do things like haul equipment or tow a boat? I'm not hurting anyone with more emissions or by taking up parking spots, but I would still have to pay the tax. Do all people use their SUVs for what they were designed for? No, but the public as a whole shouldn't be punished because some people decide they want to look cool in a hummer.

I also don't believe in rewarding people for choosing more fuel efficient vehicles. If the savings in gas is so great then that should be the reward in it self.

And, as the price of imported oil continues to rise (China and India will see to that), our economy is headed for trouble.

                    We should care.

Here's an interesting fact. We don't buy Iran oil. Maybe we should get our facts straight.

NEVER is it a good time for the government to set social policy through taxation. Sure, YOU might hate big SUVs and smoking and whatever. But it is a slippery slope. If we allow this, pretty soon the government WILL tax something YOU do care about.

We can not and should not set social policy with taxes. :spank:

I don't support this at all. Although I don't plan on buying a SUV any time soon, the government shouldn't be controlling what people buy. This is totally against capitalism and consumer market.
Also, it might not stop here and they might start spreading taxes to other vehicles. Soon, we will all be driving Honda Civics and Dodge Neons.

I'm just glad I don't live in California. That place is hell for automotive enthuasists.

"we more oil from mexico than the gulf"

Like every other fact stated here, none of this affects what I said.

Oil is a world market. It doesn't matter where we get our particular oil from.

Here's the deal. Iran is developing an atomic bomb. Bad news for us. If we didn't import oil, we could tell Iran "Cut it out or we'll hurt you." They'd cut it out. But now, if we do (or if we hurt them), Iran could stop selling oil. They're a big part of world oil supply. The price of a barrel would go to over $100. We'd be badly hurt economically. So we don't tell Iran that, and they develop an atomic bomb.

Depending on imported oil is bad for us, period. Doesn't matter who we buy from. It's a world market and people we don't buy from still have power over us. And the price of a barrel of oil is headed up, no matter what, because of worldwide demand.

We need alternative energy sources and we need to conserve energy. Bad times are ahead if we don't get ready.

taxing suv's is stupid. the tax won't go to us but in the pockets of the people that put the tax together. and they better not give tax breaks to hybrid cars. not after the EPA says that their fuel milage test for hybrids are inaccurate. come 2008 they will be doing a new test and they expect the MPG for hybrid car to drop 10%-15% while regular cars will drop 2%-5%.
