Here's what I think about the issue regarding faithfulness to the comic/characters vs. adapting them for a movie: the theme for X-Men is what is most important, not the exact details with how the material is presented: who cares if the Phoenix is a second part of Gene's personality (movie) vs. a being that inhabits her body? (comic.) The whole theme of the X-Men universe emphasizes tolerance of individual differences. Details are just the meat. It's called artistic license.
