  • Pulled over by a plain clothes cop

The other night I worked really late. Left work at 10 pm. I stop at Mobil at about 10:30 and lightly squawk the tires on the FB on my way out (new pavement  ) a car follows me out of Mobil - no big deal. I keep to about 10 over on the back roads. About 5 miles later, dude turns on his wig-wags in his grill and has a really wussy siren. I pull over not thinking much. This is out on a back road, and he pulled me over by a well lit fire station.

Out steps a "cop". Plain clothes with a badge around his neck. He askes if it is my car and then asks for license and reg. He goes back to his car, chats on the radio (I could hear it), and then comes back. He says "Sorry, I thought you were someone else", and sends me on my way.

My friends keep telling me I should have taken off when I realized the cop was not in uniform. I was thinking about calling the town police and asking if they have non-uniform cops and if I am suppose to stop.

My brother thinks there may be a well-known drug dealer with the same car or something.

Thoughts? Opinions. BTW, that's 7 times in a row pulled over with no ticket.

yes you have to pull over even if its a plain clothed officer, its still an officer none the less. if you really question it, keep your window rolled up but for a crack, and call the police on your cell phone, they will confirm if you are being pulled over, or if its some guy w/ wigwags on his crown vic

This is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. Im willing to bet if you try and be safe it will just piss them off.

It's like that episode on police chases, where they were pulling a woman over on some back road, so she drove a reasonable speed until she pulled into a gas station and parked. She told the officer she was scared to pull over. And there she is, evading police on "Wild police chases" on fox with the announcer saying she was nuts.

If a plain clothes or unmarked car pulls you over, you have the right to request that a mark car/uniformed officer comes to the scene.

Re: Pulled over by a plain clothes cop

I wouldn't trust someone in plain clothes claiming to be a cop. This reminds me of something that happened to me a few months ago. I went out my back door to get something out of my car (the parking lot is in back along the street,) and this guy that claime he was an Oklahoma County sheriff asked me who I was and ID'd me, but he never showed me a badge, only pointed to the one on his "uniform." At first when he talked to me I started to turn and walk back into my apt, but he said to me "do you run away when you see a police officer?," or something along those lines. I turned back and showed him my DL. Unlike your suspect cop, this guy appeared to be in uniform, but it concerned me that he didn't identify himself to begin with. I was just glad my gf didn't walk outside, it could've been some rapist for all I know.

if that was true they would not have unmarked cars, yes you have to pull over, its still a cop, however if they are in an unmarked car they MUST be in uniform in order to pull anybody over, however if it is a marked car, they do not have to be in uniform, i was told this by a cop before.

thats dumb man, u chould have never pulled over.. I have wig wags on my car, and a siren.. just for kicks. but i dont have any red of blue lights, which is illegal... blue is totally illegal and you can only have red on the rear of the car....

people have passed me going like 100 on the highway, and i would pull them over then take off........ probably what he did, but he actually got out of the car to **** with u. u will NOT get in trouble if u would have not pulled over. If you EVER feel like the person behind you is NOT a cop, just drive normal and call 911 and tell them the situation and exactly where you are. they can tell you and you will NOT get in any trouble for pulling over late if it was a real cop.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PULL OVER IF THERE IS NO RED/BLUE
wig wags are not just on "police cars", nor do they define it as enough to show you are the police. wig wags are legal off road in all 50 states, and only an 80 dollar ticket here if used on the road. wigwags are also not impersonating a police officer.... but the guy who pulled you over, did.....

Yes that is exactly what I would do. Just be cause he isn't in uniform doesn't mean that your immune.

Pretty sure when he heard the officer talking to his dispatch center over the radio, that is usually a pretty good indication that he is a real officer dumbass.
And yes, you WILL get in trouble if you do not stop.
