My little brother is going off to college so my dad is buying him a desktop computer and asked me to find a good one since he doesn't know much about computers. But I'm really lazy and I know there are people on here that know alot more than I do. So, it has to be a name brand with a good warranty (at least a few years) and cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000. Any brands and/or models anyone recomend? How about processors, I know amd has a 64bit chip, does pentium? It's been a while since I've reaserched computers so I'm pretty much in the dark, so any opinions are welcome.

Will you be building or buying retail? What does he want out of this computer - an ultimate gaming machine, does he work with video compression or image editing a lot, or is it purely for schoolwork/internet activities? You can get a lot for $2000 if you build it yourself.

Check with the school first to see what he will need. I know a lot of school have specific requirements for computers and some have different requirements per major.

Yeah, and if it were for myself I'd probably just build it, but my dad wants to buy him a retail (since neither him nor my brother know much about computers, they DEFINITELY will need a warranty and customer service because I'm sure as he11 not fixing it every time it breaks).
He's basically going to be using it for school (business major) so pretty much standard office applications, internet, and probably a little bit of gaming and music. But definitely nothing as high tech as video or image editing. (Really he probably would do just fine with a $1000 computer, but I'm not paying for it, I'm just supposed to pick it out, so I don't care)
I don't really play computer games anymore, I have a 128mb graphics card and the games I used to play always worked fine, but I figure standards have gone up, for light gaming is there any need for more than a 256mb card?
The school has no requirements but they recomend dell (you can get 15% off through the school)

If you do go through Dell double check the price against the price without the discount. When I ordered my laptop it came out to be over $400 more if I had ordered with my school discount. I got the Latitude series though, so it might be better with the home systems. Not a big Dell fan, but it was the closest I could get to what I wanted.

Dell's "home systems" prices are usually better than "small business" or institutional prices.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Dells are really proprietary. I would definately see if the school he is going to has a contract with a specific manufacturer so u can get the schools deal.
Also i would go towards a HP machine. They seem to be leading the market and u can get really good warranties on them.
Im going to George Mason this upcoming school year for my first year of college and i will be buying a HP laptop! U cant go wrong with HP. Id definately look into a HP...
Yes pentium does have a 64 bit processor out. AMD gets better bench marks out of theres tho. 2000 should get u a pretty kick *** machine tho with a decent warranty.
