  • Shifter Question

What in the world is an automatic paddle shifter??

Is it more sporty than a 6-Speed??

    Re: Shifter Question

Think of it as an automatic that you can, if you so choose, shift yourself. There is no clutch, but you control the shifting with paddles on the steering wheel.

"sportier" is subjective. Some people love them. To me, a "real" sports car has a clutch. (puts flamesuit on)

There are two paddles behind the wheel that you can squeeze with your fingers. Up and downshifts. Squeeze a paddle and a computer pulls in the clutch, shifts, and lets out the clutch. Sometimes the computer can also shift them as it sees fit, like an automatic transmission.

In racing series where they're legal (like Formula One), everyone uses them. They use the semi-automatic version, shifts only when you tell it to. Shifts fast, lets you keep your attention on other stuff instead of timing the clutch and shift lever movements..

            Re: Shifter Question

An automatic with paddle shifters is completely different from the system Ferrari uses. An auto just tells the computer you would like to shift or it does it on its own when you hit redline like V6Bob said. The system in Ferraris is just like a regular manual car except hydrolics are moving the shift linkage and the clutch. By doing that the shift can be faster and less error prone than with a person shifting.

Those paddle shift semi-automatic gearboxes used in the Formula One cars are abbbbsolutely ridiculous. Apparently the shift time is quicker than the human brain synapse time.... .. or so i've heard.
