  • Computer Question, PLease help!!!

I need to get a bigger hard drive so I'm pickin up a 250gb SATA HD off newegg. I currently have a 200gb SATA HD now. And I was reading about how to set up the the 2 of them in a RAID setting. My mobo can use the RAID 0,1 settings. My question is, which one should I use. I read that if I have it in 0 then the drives will just mirror each other. And in 1, the computer will only "see" 2 200gb hard drives meaning I'll lose 50gb. Am I understanding this correctly?

i'm pretty sure you have to have 2 identical hard drives, you may be able to set up the raid so it just combines them and they stripe some, but i think you are just better off to let the 2 do their own thing and be independent, i keep system files on my 160, and everything else on my 250 and everything is happy

ohh you can have two SATA drives and not have them in a RAID setup?

no matter what setup you use if you have mismatched hdd sizes it goes with the smallest one. raid 0 has no fault tolerence and is basically using 2 drives for one purpose. you'd really get 1 larger drive because the data is aplit evently across the two. This is good for performance. Raid 1 mirrors a hdd onto the other.
And no you do not need to setup Raid at all to have 2 sata drives connected.

also, when you set up a raid array it automatically erases everythign on the HD's. something to think about if you have filled up a 200 GB HD.

 no thanks. I'll just be havin' 2 SATA HDs with no RAID crap.

Better off that way, unless you are trying to do something really high end anyways, raid is generally used only in servers, for mirroring of hard drives, or mass amounts of hard drives.

Actually, RAID in high end systems is used for parity checking HD (RAID 5), so that if one fails, the data is not lost - it can rebuilt from the parity bits on the other drivers.

There are several types of RAID for different purposes.
