  • Anyone know about all-in-1 printers?

In the market for a new printer because my Dell A940 all-in-one is on it's last leg. I want one that can print, copy, scan & fax. I have my eye on a this Brother 420CN at CompUSA, but I don't know about Brother's reputation. I owned a Lexmark before and it was a POS!
I have about $200 to spend...give or take a few dollars.

    Any help is appreciated.

I haven't used Brother inkjets, but if they're anything like the lasers we have they're awesome printers. We have two of the same model, and the older one last had the $70 toner changed 2-1/2 years ago while being our main printer most of that time shared between my family on a network. I only bought a second because I was away at school.

Personally I would stay as far clear from Brother as humanly possible! They are a really cheap alternative for business class machines, and they don't hold up.You are much better getting an HP, or Epson, Cannon, all depends on taste from there. But brothers are problematic, and very expensive to get fixed.

If you are in need of something truely profesional spend the extra $5000 but doesn't sound like you are in that area.

A salesman at Staples said the same thing to me when I was looking at a Brother 4in1 today. I'll take this into serious consideration and take a look at Canon PIXMA's. I've heard good things about those printers.

          Thanks!!

stay away from lexmark and dell, we have that brother at the fire station, the first one we got was defective from the factory, overall it works pretty well, but the ink cartridges kinda suck, they are all individual, which saves from waste, but they also dont last too horribly long, but it does have built in LAN and the fax function is integrated, not software, its overall pretty nice i suppose

My wife got a Brother for her business from Staples - took it back and got an HP. I got an HP when my Lexmark died.

I was going to get an HP when I switched to laser, but the Brother uses toner that costs about half what the $300 range HPs did per page. Every inkjet I've owned (I think five now) has been an HP though. I just picked based on ratings and personal preference, but looking at the new Brothers they do kinda look cheaply built.

ok, guys , now listen from an expert:
all Dells are Lexmars , 90% of HP laser printers are Cannons,
Brothers are cheap on toner, but, there is always a catch, do not forget that when you buy an HP toner you would get Imaging drum and a toner in one box , for Brother you would get toner only and imaging drum goes separately. Have you priced Brother toner+imaging dum and comared to the HP? I dont think so. Long story short, if you want to get laser , get a HP and it would last you for a very long time(if you woudnt smoke of course)

Does it have to be laser? I'd go with something like this --> CLICKY

that should do for a home use.

I got my Cannon MP780 for around $170 with a rebate, normally they are about $200.

I love it because it has an autofeeder for copying stuff. Like load 50 pages to copy and hit "copy".

IT has a FAX, which was awesome for me, cause I do light faxing, it even also has 2 different kinds of black ink, one for documents, one for photo, and the photos are very good. It also supports "Pictbridge" which means you can connect digital cams right up to it and print from them.

I bought it mainly for copying and printing, and cause I neede a fax machine, i justified the "high" cost becuase if I were to get a fax machine later, it would cost much more.

Since it's an inkjet the volume is fairly low, but I only use it for home/ light home office work.

Did you price it before making assumptions? I did when I was first looking at them. A Brother drum is rated for 20,000 pages, and you can get them fairly cheap online ($60-100 or so). The toner is rated for 6,000 pages (I'm pretty sure I'm past that on the replacement) and costs $56 from Amazon. A typical HP toner/drum combo costs about the same and lasts 2,500 pages. The Brother still comes out cheaper, and I'm planning to get rid of it when it needs a drum anyways. The second one I bought was a refurb that cost $99 from Amazon, so I'm not too attached to it. Either way, I've saved a lot on toner.

And it must take a great expert to know that Dell uses rebadged Lexmarks. That's been going on forever. The only difference is the cartridges that are made so you have to buy them from Dell instead of off the shelf Lexmark ones.

I think that smoke that you advise against is probably affecting your ability to spell and add. You might want to work on that.

Edit: I'm not saying that Brother is the god of laser printers, and they're not the best or anything like that. Their cheapest new models do suck. HP is good and I looked at them first, but the price of the consumables is rediculous compared to mine.
