From what i've heard and read GM picked the name cuz it was a nice looking word with a definition nobody would know. People eventually found out that it meant "friend" in some weird french (or was it spanish?) dialect, and then Ford found that in another language it meant "shrimp". As you may imagine they had fun with that ;)
