  • I got new bumper lettering

As you can see in this picture, the paint off my letters is disappearing

So, I hit up Ebay, and got these

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

I'm going to cross my fingers and hope they last longer than the paint the previous owner put on it. : I'm hoping it'll be here in 3 weeks. I need to wait for payment to clear (E-cheque) Will have pictures then :wavey

Unfortunately i'm willing to bet that you'll have to remove all that old paint (cuz its peeling) before putting on any decals... :(

I'm trying to think of a way to get the old paint off... I have a while before they get here, so I'm in no hurry. What would happen if I put them on with the old peeling paint?

It should be in appearance, wasn't even thinking, blahhh.

If you put them on the flaking paint, they wont stick and will just flake off with the rest of the paint. VERY carefully try nail polish remover and a Q-tip on there. Make sure the nail polish remover has acetone or it wont work. If that doesn't work, your only choice may be lacquer thinner or something.

I heard rubbing alcohol as well?

I'm afraid I'll accidently get some of the stuff to remove the paint, on my ACTUAL paint, all it takes is one drip:(

Thanks though, I'll make sure to use your advice. I might remove the gold paint right now since it's flaking... HELL, it might be all gone by the time my letters come in!

Just be very careful, use a Q-tip and a tooth pick. Swab the soaked Q-Tip on the letters very carefully until it starts to set in, the carefully use the tooth pick to "pick" at it. Be careful not to get your actual paint. Keep a rag handy just in case you get any spills.

I don't think rubbing alcohol will work to get the paint off, but it WILL work to clean the area before applying the letters. :)

EDIT: The reason the paint is probably flaking is because you probably did not prep the area well. If thats the case, you may be able to get the majority of the flaking paint off just by peeling it and using a tooth pick gently. Give it a try.

I didn't do the paint myself, a previous owner did, but are you saying just pick away at it with a tooth pick with nothing else? (Thinner, rubbing alcohol)

Well depending on how bad it is flaking you may not need anything else. Try and get it off with your finger nail and see what happens. If it won't come off, then use the other stuff. It wouldn't hurt to try.
