  • Nissan's new "Xtronic CVT "

im not sure if you guys have seen the new nissan maxima commercial's ( spelling ) with the one gear, and then the guy start making shifting sounds. well i was intersted so i wen to nissan's site, but couldnt find much. all it says is:

    "Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
Rather than using a few fixed gear ratios like a conventional transmission, Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) transfers power through two variable pulleys and a high-strength steel belt. This delivers a near-infinite number of ratios and keeps your engine within its optimum power range at all times for maximum acceleration. Xtronic CVT also comes with a manual mode. Perfect for those times you want more control. "

anybody know anything more about? it sounds very interesting and im not sure i understand exactly how it works.

ya we had in the murano, pretty cool at first I couldnt figure out why it wasnt shifting, but then realized I was still accelerating....never really read about it, but that sucker held the tach at reline and just kept speeding up, thing is though it only hit redline at about 60-70 mph...if you ask me thats a really tall first gear...the maxima may be different....but yes it is very cool, something like audi made a few years ago.

My mom's Freestyle uses something similar, I believe it uses bands. It is pretty cool I guess.

I'm pretty sure Polaris ATVs use this as well. I never liked it for quads, since it sounds like its redlining the whole time while accelerating. I'd rather shift through gears.

yeah, they're pretty cool but i'd still rather have a manual. unless it was like a really nice luxury vehicle where i wouldnt like the "shift shock". definately cool stuff. oddly simple how the whole thing works actually...

no prob! the site has TONS of info. its a good way to kill a few hours if you're bored. one good thing about it i was thinkin is that if the tranny takes a dump, it probably wouldnt be that expensive to replace. probably about a grand cuz there are so few parts...
