Re: What's the dumbest thing you have ever done, car related?

1.)hmm, lets see. about 3-4 months after i grad HS back in '00 i was all ready and excited to move out. i was living in wichita falls tx at the time. one of my best friends had moved to dallas a year earlier and he had his own place and asked if i wanted to come up there, live w/him, get a job, then get a 2 bedroom apt. great plan, i was all excited and everything blah blah blah. very first night i get there, we unloud my clothes and **** and then go out and party. went to a couple of his buddy's houses and chilled and knocked down a few brewskies. i think we were heading back to his house, i was driving,(i had like 5 or so beers, didnt want to get to eff'd up because i was driving) we were heading back to his place. all of a sudden i see red/white/blue lights flashing, im like oh ****. resulted in my 1st DUI. no fun, sucked *** actually. i was in my '87 camaro at the time, and was told the only reason i was pulled over is because my license plate wasnt visible, it was flipped down(in order to open the hatch you have to flip it down to put the key in to unlock/lock it). i was like mother ****er, what a lame reason to get pulled over. no excuses though, it was my fault. lol cop said he followed me like 3 miles before i pulled over, but i think he's full of it because i think i would notice flashing lights behind me.

2.) waking up in jail not remembering how the **** i got there, scared as ****, wondering where i was. hmmm, this one involves a 12 pack, 8-9 bars(as in xanax), a hit and run(which was dropped to a "leaving the scene of an accident"), no insurance at the time, and my stupidity. resulted in a DWI. yea, im an idiot(well, was). lol i havent sat foot in a car after ive been drinking nor ridden in any of my buddy's cars after we've(they've) been drinking. too this day i have no recolection of that night, only from what friends who were there that night told me and the police report. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS NOT WORTH IT. YES, IM PREACHING, BUT LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES. JAIL SUCKS.

EDIT-oh yea, these things(dwi's,dui's) dont just go away. they HAUNT YOU for the rest of your life. its been 6 years since the dui, and 4 years since the dwi. at my last job i was a delivery driver for an industrial company, i had been there about 2 months. they kept asking for my driving record, i said i would get it to them through the temp service i went through to get the job. but the temp service had their head up there *** and kept "not" sending it like i asked. finally, one monday morning they send it to my employer(at the time). they see it and automatically let me go because of it. said it was too much of a risk to put on their insurance. ewww i was pissed/bummed/upset.....
couldnt of happened at a worse time because i really liked the job and it was like 1 mile from my place. i know it was my fault, but i didnt think i would be paying for it this far down the road. i was very bummed to say the least

Re: What's the dumbest thing you have ever done, car related?

Wow, these posts are amazing. It sounds like lots of folks learned from their mistakes also. I'm too ashamed and embarrassed to write here about the dumbest stuff I did.

My dumbness continues to today - although very tame by comparison.

I rarely - make that never - take the Firebird through a car wash anymore, much less through one that has those spinning thingies that sort of clean your car while basically stripping any wax off.

Well, last week I decided I just had to take my car through car wash, just this one time. DUMB ME.

I'm in the car wash watching the thingies spinning around. I'm thinking about how I'm going to have to re-wax and polish the car. Then the radio station starts to fade a little - HOLY CRAP!!! THE ANTENNA!!! PUNCH THE POWER BUTTON!!! - CRACK - Too late. What's left of the antenna is being knocked around like an intern in the Clinton White House.

...and the wash was lousy anyway.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Re: What's the dumbest thing you have ever done, car related?

Well... I'm probably a grandma compared to how most of you drive. I love the power, but for the most part I'm responsible.. I use my blinkers... don't speed (honestly.. I go the limit. I've sped maybe 10 times in the last year)... Always check my mirrors before changing lanes..

Well... I was having a particularly bad day. I had to go to a doctors appointment I didn't know about until the day of... after I'd already planned on relaxing... my parents forced me to go, and I was ticked.

I was getting on the highway on the way back. Before I'd even gotten on the highway I'd already hit 70 and put my cruise control on there. To get on the highway you had to change lanes twice because there were two entrances.

I changed lanes fine, then I look over and check my mirrors and change lanes.

              *bump*

All of a sudden I see a green pickup truck zoom by me. I overcorrect left, overcorrect right, do two 360s off of the highway into the grass going 70, slam on my breaks, and run straight into a tree probably going 40-50.

I could've easily died, but I didn't have a scratch on me except for where the seatbelt was on my shoulder and where the airbag deployment rubbed my arms. God really protected me... The bulletproof laminate on my windows kept them from spraying glass into my face. Happened about a week ago:

              The bullet-proof laminate:

Needless to say, it's been really depressing and embarrassing... But there is a 99% chance insurance is going to pay me more for my car than I paid for it 2 years ago, and I found another camaro of the same year, color, and transmission with only 18,000 more miles on it... so hopefully I can buy that one...

that one had some electronic problems with the cd changer so who knows... maybe this will end up being good for me in the end. My insurance (to the amazement of me, my parents, and the insurance lady) will only go up 110 dollars a year... I'm 20 years old...

Re: What's the dumbest thing you have ever done, car related?

This is truly truly stupid, but I'll post it anyway...

many years back when I was still learning my way around a garage, I was changing the front shocks on my Jeep YJ. One top shock nut stripped and the whole shock could turn in the mount. I couldn't hold the shock with my bare hands and get enough torque to get the nut off. so..

I drilled a hole on the side of the shock (so I could grip it with pliers). of course hydraulics squirted everywhere. Later I read the side of the shocks and it said "caution flamable" (or some such warning). Electric drill, flamable fluids..

                Pretty stupid.

Re: What's the dumbest thing you have ever done, car related?

I was driving down the interstate in my friends dodge stealth doing a little over 120 mph. Then the exit I needed to take came up too fast so I was going to pass it and go to the next one. But my friend said that I could make it so I cut over and tried to take the exit. The recommended speed was like 25 mph so needless to say I was going to fast, I hammered the brakes and they locked up and I sled off the exit ramp doing about 110 mph and the car rolled like three times that I can remember. We were both very lucky because both of use were okay. But the car was definently totaled. I still feel horrible about it to this day.

Umm. With cars, I put my left front fender into a basketball poll. I was reversing and turning and didn't compensate for the front end swaying out, only like $800 in damage, but still.

Wow, I feel lucky compared too the other posts. No tickets since I started driving, or accidents on record.

basketball poll was in my driveway :)

The most stupid thing/closest call I've had so far was last spring. I had some friends in my car and I was showing off. We drove over to one of those undeveloped subdivisions and I found a nice little loop to haul through. Well, I tried pulling a drift through one of the tight turns at around 45mph. doin' great until suddenly the rear caught and I rocketed to the outside of the turn. The car hopped the curb at around 35 and we went right into the dirt. I missed a fire hydrant by about 2 feet...

                          Heh. Scared me ****less.

former lurker/newguy to this board with story

Some of you guys might know me from NJFBOA.org.... but I just recently registered on here. Anyway- thought this might be the proper thread to introduce myself.

What is the DUMBEST thing I've ever done carwise..... well....

I designed websites when I was 16 in highschool... and saved up to buy an awesome 95z28.. loved that thing.. awesome awesome car... i had it for exactly three months and on oct 28th 2001 I decided to speed it and see how fast I could get it to go. I got up to 140mph on a short road in the middle of the night, and ended up going into a 50ft traintrack embankment and taking out 25 feet of guardrail.... these are two pics of the car... I have more if anyone wants to see them

You can see me and my sister standing in the background of the second pic. Needless to say, it was probably the DUMBEST thing I could've ever done... and it took me a good 3 yrs to save up for another camaro.... but still... I drive like a grandmother now. Believe it or not the engine was still good in the car... so a friend of mine and I parted it out and I sold the LT1 which bought me the car I drove for 3 yrs till I got the camaro I have now. I've shared my story w/ kids quite a bit telling them why you should NOT speed.. I'm literally lucky to be here talking with you guys. Believe it or not... I got through the accident without a single scratch on me... and a friend of mine, who was in the car with me when I had the accident, also did not have one thing happen to him. I guess the man upstairs was looking out for me huh?

Anyways, I was a total idiot i know and that is an understatement. Anyways, hope that was an enjoyable story... everyone I tell it to always goes.. "holy S**T... " lol...

anyway, fast forward to today- here is the car I have now- a 1998 v6 camaro that I bought with 27,000 on it, and now has 59,000.

So yeah.... I dunno... do I have everyone beat?!?!?! :-P anyway, good to be registered on here and not a lurker anymore :)
