Re: What's the dumbest thing you have ever done, car related?

On my old Camaro, 87 2.8 V6 The tranny pan gasket and filter needed to be changed, I put it off for a couple weeks because it had been raining and I park in a parking lot, so I just drove my girlfriend's car.

So... One night, i'm piss drunk, it's about 5:30 AM and the sun is rising and it's POURING out. I decided (I was intoxicated, mind you) it was time to swap that gasket and filter out. So I haul my tools and ramps and Jacks out put the car up and start working. Considering how much I had to drink I did a fine job.

6:30 AM Rolls around and i'm finishing up, I had my glasses off because of how wet it was outside, and I'm putting the last bolt on and there is a bunch of tranny fluid and gasket sealant in the hole where the bolt went. So, I reach over and grab the Motul Brake Clean (Nasty NASTY stuff, basically acid) and spray it down. Fluid hits the tranny pan and falls right back into my eyes. I was blind for about an hour, had to crawl and feel my way back inside the house which was about 30 yards away.

Intoxication + Car Work =

Had the car for about 3 months, and it was late at night and wanted to hot rod it a little bit. I was at a stop sign making a left turn to the feeder road. I gave it too much gas and my back end slipped around, banging my rims on the curb.

I locked my keys in my car once... That's embarrising. :)

Ahh, yes that would be dumb. But thats not how it happend. He TOOK my car, while I was sleeping, and wrecked my Camaro. To this day, I STILL remind him of it. I miss that car, I poured everything I had into it. 1 more year to pay it off. But most everyone knows the story, so I will let it go for now.........:(

              Dumb in the car story:
My friend had a 80's Z-28 (mistake on its own, but not mine) and we would drive home and do stupid crap, powerslides, etc. We were pretty safe, we would do it on wide turns with no stop signs or anything, but on to the story.

One morning I wake up and I am craving a sausage mcmuffin something fierce, so my friend and I head to McDonalds (I don't know why we both drove, but oh well.) On the way back, I have a Large Dr. Pepper in the cupholder and the bag of food on the pass seat. I am going pretty fast, and my turn is coming up, I drop it to second, crank the wheel to the right and gun it. I slide around the turn like something out of F&F3 and do sideways past a hydrant, sign, without coming close. No way my buddy could top that. Well to get in my neighborhood, you have to take a right, then the first left which is about 50-60 feet. I am facing right and I need to go left, so I crank the wheel to the left and instead of sliding, the car hooked and whipped over the left while my soda and food continued on there path to the right. Soda goes all over, and my hashbrown ended up in the back seat. The Sausage mcmuffin came unwrapped and fell in the crack between the pass. seat and door.

In short - Always fasten a safety restraint around your hasbrown and breakfast sandwiches. :D

              Dumbest working on car story.
Tried to install a nitrous kit while hung over severely.
              It didn't work. Thank god.

had a bet with a guy that a car can't go over 15mph backwards, and that the speedo won't work.. well, 42mph later, I went airbourne off a curb and hit a wall.

many years back when I was still learning my way around a garage, I was changing the front shocks on my Jeep YJ. One top shock nut stripped and the whole shock could turn in the mount. I couldn't hold the shock with my bare hands and get enough torque to get the nut off. so..

I drilled a hole on the side of the shock (so I could grip it with pliers). of course hydraulics squirted everywhere. Later I read the side of the shocks and it said "caution flamable" (or some such warning). Electric drill, flamable fluids..

                            Pretty stupid.

I have one really crazy baby making story. I'll try to keep it as clean as possible.

                              Setting: Post Katrina New Orleans.

I have a red 98 camaro. Earlier this year I started dating a Vietnamese girl. (In hindsight, I believe that all asian chicks are absolutely out of their minds with bravado.) Anyway. We had been at a bar that night, dancing and shooting pool. No, neither of us had much to drink, so there's no blaming what happened on alcohol. We drive to the house I used to live in, in Lakeview, which is 200 yards from ground zero of where the 17th Street Canal Levee breached and flooded a third of the city. Needless to say, that area is now completely unlit, uninhabited, and most importantly, unpatrolled by police, especially since I lived on a dead end.

So we drive all the way to the end of the road and hide behind a dumpster. I turn the car off, and we start talking. Talking leads to touching, and touching leads to R rated material. Apparently I must've been doing something pleasant because she whispers in my ear that she wants to do something very naughty (although certainly not said in so many words) on the hood of my car. Outside. In the open. Flat on her back. On my hood. Basically all I can get out of my mouth at this point is, "Ah, uh, kay." So we get out and start going at it on the hood. For about 5 minutes. Then out of my left peripheral vision I pick up movement......

....Time for a side note. I don't know if anybody's ever been in a true situation of abject terror. Let me sum it up. Everything freezes. You're scared to move your eyes to confirm your fear because there's a very silly part of you that whispers to you, "Maybe if don't look, he won't be there." This becomes moot at some point, because usually the object of your terror will confirm itself against your will. At that point, everything freezes again, as your whisper to yourself, "Maybe he's like a T-rex, and he won't see you if you don't move." Anyway, onward.

                              Where was I.

                              Oh, movement in left periph.

I experience the side note aforementioned. The movement turns out to be an old guy on a bike riding towards and then past us. (Old guy on a bike in a ghost town at 3 in the morning. About as uncommon as interracial sex on a camaro in a ghost town at 3 in the morning.) As he cycles bye at a slow rate, he sez, "Yeah, take it to her."

                              Talk about an instant deflator.

At that point, beyond any reasonable instinct to the contrary, I was done. She was done. We composed ourselves, got back in the car, and called in a night. Or a morning more accurately.

That, friends, is the single stupidest thing I have ever done in my life. If that guy had been a cop, I'd be in jail, and so would she. The things sex will drive a man to do knows no bounds.

On a cool note, tho, she left a hand print on my windshield. I've washed the car 4 times since then, and I've yet to wash off the hand print.
