  • Flooding... will the rain never stop??

I've been in this house with my family since i was 2. 17 years. We had the basement waterproofed about 11 years ago, and now today it flooded. Its been raining all night and day, and is still raining, the hardest rain i've ever seen in my life. Theres a golf course in my backyard that usually floods a little but now its a pond. You wouldnt even recognize it as a golf course. Water is flowing like a river all the way down behind all the houses to where its settling behind our house, as well as the rest of the street. Right next to the golf course is a park, all of this runs along behind the backyards of my street. The park is completely under water. 3 feet deep in some areas, and its unbelievable. We talked to about 5 or 6 neighboors who have all had their basements flood out as well today.

Apparently some water was coming through the walls, we saw it spurting through little holes in the cinder block (this happened to our neighboors who also have their basement waterproofed). Then we heard a gurgling and looked at the drain in our laundry room in the basement. Water was coming up from it really fast, and this is also what happened to everyone else. All the drains around here are backed up. The water finally went down. The bad thing is we have a finished basement, carpeting, entertainment area, weightbench/machines, work room. All of this got flooded. Now keep in mind only a couple of inches, but still enough to do damage. The carpet is worthless, so that'll be getting pulled. Me and my dad spent a half hour while the water was coming through the drain moving valuables upstairs. We managed to get an antique drysink up stairs safely. The worst loss is a chest that my dads great grandfather made. He was a wagon wheel maker, and built the chest to hold of of his tools, some of which handmade, and we unfortunately had no way of moving it due to its weight and being kinda pushed far back in the work room where we "thought" it was safe.

This sucks so bad... And as bad as this is, I can only imagine what others have gone through with flooding, and be thankful that ours wasnt even comparable..

...sorry for the long post, just trying to get some stuff out of my head...

I'm still not clear on just what this "basement" thing is. Whatever they are, they do not exist here.

But seriously - sorry to hear about this. It sounds really bad.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

That sucks man. Back in 1997 we had a the biggest flood here in Fargo. We had to sandbag all around our house. We were the only ones on our street that ended up not getting water in the basement. It was crazy. Now we moved two miles south of where we were then. But now we have a river in our back yard rather then accross the street. But the river is a small offbranch of the Red River that does the real flooding so were okay.
Anyways you could send some of that rain over here because its only rained about twice this month. Our grass is dead.
Best of luck to you and your family though.

well its been pouring hard ever since i first posted this, and the water outside is getting deeper... i cant even imagine the park past the golfcourse because like i said thats where all the water is running in to. Im gonna go tomorrow if the rain holds off and get pics. I work for the city parks, and my supervisor who i jsut talked to online was saying its almost as bad in other parts of the city that he saw when he was lockiing up. me and him are goin tomorrow to get pics of everything. i'll post up the ones from the golfcourse and park..

damn, that sucks man... flooding is just one of those things... you cant do anything about it but sit back and watch the water rise... its pretty freaky really.. a month or so back, the whole valley that my city is in was flooding. if not for the dikes all along the river, we'd have been under 10-15 feet of water. I even got evacuated. but at least for you its only the basement. it coulda been worse man.. as a side note, i know people that have drain plugs for their basement drains. They take off the grate and pop these plugs in to keep the water from pushing up through. Maybe it woudla helped you. I know they can be set up to work well..

Yea, the worst thing is just knowing you can't do anything about it but watch...

We can't put a plug in our drain because a lot of stuff for the washing machine goes into it, and besides that, water came up through the sinks and downstairs shower as well..

We just got my drumset outside, i was able to raise it off the ground last night so the wood shells wouldnt get wet, and we're in the process of getting the weight equipment outside to the garage. The nice thing is we have 2, 2 car garages, so we have tons of room out there for stuff. We have to pull up the carpeting too.

I have a ton of pics from the flooding but none from right around the golf course or park cause it was too dark. It's not even worth posting them. I did have to take pics of the damage in the basement for my parents to give to the insurance company, maybe i'll post some of those.
