I'm about to trade in my 04 Silverado for a 99 Ranger. The payment will be much cheaper and gas is starting to make my wallet suffer. I'm looking to start improving my house a little bit.

Anyway, about the Ranger: It's got the 3.0 v6 engine, sports a manual transmission and has four wheel drive. It has the standard cab. The Ranger has 70k miles on it. Should I look for anything specific on this truck with that amount of miles? Anything I should know about Rangers in general before I trade my Chevy in tomorow? I'm all ears. Feel free to throw in your $.02.

One thing- please don't give me the whole "Ford sucks, don't buy that crap" thing, I'm a GM guy at heart, but I have to do this for my family. I'm not at the point where I can't spend any money, but it'd be nice to drive to town and not have to worry about how many groceries I CAN'T buy, know what I mean? C'mon ladies and gents- tell me about Rangers...

    Re: opinion please

a buddy of mine has a 01 ranger 4x4 Edge., pretty good truck overall except he's gone through a few rearends.
dont expect good gas mileage though, he had a 4.0v6 and didnt get very good mileage at all, probably the 4wd.

i wanna buy a 4.3 silverado, they are good trucks.

If you're a GM guy at heart why not just buy a smaller chevy truck?

Ya, look into a S-10 man. Anyways, I know a few people who have Rangers. One has a 86 I believe, and the only he's had to do to it cuz of the miles was rebuild the carb, which is no biggie. Another friend has a newer one, 99 or 00 I believe. It sounds like the powersteering has gone out in the thing, but it hasn't. I dunno if it's just low on fluid, or if that's how they all sound (have noticed a couple others sounding the same way). I don't know if this is a potential problem or not, but just letting ya know.

you're going from a fullsize to a small truck just to finish your basement? get buy w/ an unfinished basement and keep the nice truck. I'd rather have a nice truck and a crappy basement then a nice basement and a crappy truck.

yeah... you think its more of an eyesore than it is. my friend has an unfinished basement. all he did was hang a TV from teh studs in the cieling, put down some rubber squares and moved all his workout stuff down there. whereas my dad spent a TON of money to do a real nice job on his basement and he's barely down there. only really uses the storage space down there and for parties. you can say you'd get the money back with the house, but not to the same extent you would for a remodeled kitchen or bath. keep the truck imo.

4x4 won't help much on gas.... but if I was to get a truck I woudl get 4x4 but I have been wanting to get into offroading a little.

                  Re: opinion please

in real life, having a nice home is probably more important.
having a finsihed basement would make the house value go up alot, and improve the overal appeal.

as long as the truck is nice your winning both ways, but i would try to find an s10 also...

                      Re: opinion please

I personally wouldnt buy a ranger, just for the gas mileage. I know that there is an increase, but you are only looking at a few miles per gallon. If you want to switch to a smaller truck for the fuel economy, then get something with a 4 cyl. and 2wd. plus, you can pick a lot of them up cheap cause a lot of companies use these kinda trucks as delivery truck. so you can get one with for a few grand and run it for a while and t hen just another one when it dies. Are you looking at switching to also benefit your vehicle payment? will the ranger be a much cheaper? If not, then you really arent saving a whole lot in just gas money. $10 a week isnt nothing, but its not a whole lot eather.. surely not enough to help you work on your house. though i would have to agree, the house is much more important than a vehicle... the house will appreciate in value, whereas the vehicle will depreciate.
