  • We can't handle the heat!

It's kind of funny. Us northerners are getting a taste of temps in the upper 90's and a heat index of 105-115. It's nasty outside. All over the news they are warning us of the dangers and urging young and old to stay inside. We've actually even had a related death just yesterday from it! The poor woman died from heat exhaustion at a Red Sox game. They closed down the Saratoga horse race track which no one can recall ever ever happening before and they actually were discussing closing down the state buildings and other businesses.

I just find it funny how if the southerners get a small flurry of snow the whole state shuts down. And just the opposite, if we get a few days with hot temps, we freak out too. :p

The big issue for us is conserving electricity. They made an announcement at work to shut off all non-essential equipment, and they warned of rolling black-outs.

That's my point. We freak out over the heat like 95* weather and the humidity like the south freaks out over snow. Nothing more, nothing less then that. Go watch some Top Gear and shaddup. :p :)

Heat related deaths in not uncommon around here. old people drop like flies. I dont know about other southern states but we love the snow we rairlt get here in oklahoma. Its just the ice storms that rock our world. cant drive for ****, power lines go down, etc.

heat really screws with power systems. makes stuff blow up and such. probably not much of an issue in Florida since they probably have already dealt with the issue since the heat is normal.

Like I said in the hot vs. cold thread, I would much rather be too hot. I actually liked the weather we were having. Now it is going to be mid-80s tomorrow and barely 80 on Friday.

Rochester set a record for our city for using something like 1,774 megawatts of electricity at 3PM yesterday. I guess thats a lot...?

Edited out all the crap, lol. I had a long winded explanation but in short:

Yeah, you are very right. Historically we aren't big on using AC's or pulling such a large load, so we have a lot of small transformers, wires and ratio's out there. The transmission system is up to snuff and can handle the load because we produce plenty of power. But when we all start kicking on those AC's, we start popping those tiny transformers out on the poles left and right, not to mention burning and melting up the small conductor.

Im guessing your distribution system is fairly new to keep up with the loads in an area that uses AC prob much of the time. Not to mention it probably gets wiped out and re-built every couple of years :p. Then all our contractors leave us hanging to go soak up the money to be made in Florida.
