and guys, wake up. you live in a democracy. b!tching is how you change things. if you just accept it, you are doing nothing. the more you complain (especially to lawmakers and w/e) the faster things change. the best way to get back right now is to complain to get laws changed, and reduce the amount of gas you use via carpool or organizing your trips or whatever it takes. if more people did that, gas prices would go down due to competition cuz of lower demand, and then politicians would start finding ways to force the oil companies to lower prices. its not really the gas stations that are gouging as much as it is the big oil companies. theres a reason why Exxon-Mobil \ holds the record for #1 and #2 greatest profit increases from quarter to quarter in all of history!
amen brother. if you just accept it like the companies want then they will keep doing what they are doing.
Sigh. Everyone wants to believe the problem is some evil guy somewhere. Oil companies, environmentalists, politicians, whoever. Then the issue is simple. Find that guy and stop him, and everything will be OK. _We_ won't have to do anything.
Reality is so much more unpleasant. With oil guys trying like mad to find the stuff (at $75/barrel, they have a lot of incentive), supply is still falling behind demand. There isn't remotely enough off our coasts or in Alaska to solve this, although there is enough to make some people very rich, which is really why there is pressure to drill.
The only cure is to use less and develop alternative ways to power vehicles and heat homes. That's hard and expensive and will cause us to make real changes in our lives.
So people prefer to believe it's just some evil guy and politicians don't dare suggest what we really need to do. And we spin merrily toward a day of reckoning, which will make $3/gallon look like the good old days.

o rly? think of it this way. we have been b1tching about gas prices since about 2000. back then gas was roughly 1.39ish a gallon. and we p1ssed and moaned about it. what happened since then? we're paying almost 2 bucks more for the same damn product 6 years later. so therefore i see no reason for us to sit here and cry about the prices. it has yet to do anything to affect the price of gas.
as far as accepting it.. do I? yes to a point, because no matter what, at the end of the day when the t/a is sitting E im still going to pay for the crap no matter what the price is. does it get me bent out of shape for what we pay? damn right it does! i dont like spending 55+dollars filling the car up but i cant do anything other than just quit giving a damn about the price becuase its a neccessity(sp?) that i need to be able to get to and from my job. so what do i do? i go get it and quit worrying about it. we all have enough things going on in our lives to be worried about the 20 cent jump and declines that go on each and everyday at the pump. when its fluxuating like 2-3 dollars instead of that 10-20 cents i can see people coming on here and throwing a fit. but ill be damned if i worry about prices jumping from 2.89 to 3.19.
i agree something needs to be done. but, until there is something that is going to be a rock solid solution we're just going to have to deal with it. everyone has cut back on plans/trips/etc now but its not enough to make a difference. :)
current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it
easy solution guys. Everyone here open our own stations in our areas. Lower the price way down and force the others around to to lower just to compete. We have a gas war going on by our cottage and I love it. There is one gas station that is always keeping the price low so then the others in the city have to follow suit. Works great. :p
lol even better sol'n! anyone ever seen beverly hillbillies?

It's not the gas stations that are gouging you (unless the station is owned by an oil company) it's the oil companies. Gas stations actually make very little profit off of gas, they make all their profits off of convenience items (snacks drinks, CIGARRETTES, etc.) inside the store. They carry gas because they know you won't go there to buy their stuff inside unless you can buy gas as well.
That said, the oil companies are gouging you, not the small guy. The only reason they're charging this much is because Americans are STUPID enough to pay it instead of buying more economical vehicles or changing their driving habits. If you don't like the prices, drive less.
I'm not saying this regarding ANYONE here, but I hate it when I hear people complaining about gas prices when they drive around town alone in their huge SUV that gets less than 20 mpg highway. Get a new car or drive less if you don't like the prices. That's what everyone can do to lower prices. The oil companies will charge what they can get without losing profits, that's economics. Supply and demand.

if all the women that drive alone in the middle of a city quit driven 4x4 suvs the demand would go down. there is no reason for some dumb lady to drive a 4 by that she probably doesnt even know how to activate, let alone in a city and with no passengers, whats the point.
its true that gas stations dont make a lot of profit off of gas. most of the profit comes from doing inspections, or whatever other services they offer. of course they make a profit on gas, but its not outrageous.
in italy, we paid 100 euro to fill up our audi A6... so paying $45 here doesnt piss me off that much.

Oil companies do not set the price of a barrel. See my previoius post. They charge accordingly based on the futures market.
ok, first off, it didnt take 20 years to build the effing hoover dam. it doesnt take 20 years to build a refinery... thats bs.
the reason we havent built one in 30 odd years is cuz the EPA a while back said that basically all NEW refineries have to conform to such and such rediculously high environmental standards.
Have you seen world new report two days ago? It does take almost 20years to build one and to have it refine millions of gallons. Have you ever seen one? It is massive. You don't build something like that in a year or two. Ofcourse new technology, it can be done in shorter than 20 years.
Because of severe global warming there's a talk of not having done anymore. Biggest problem is that people not in my neighborhood.
that kinda got garbled towards teh end but i'd really be hard pressed to believe that it takes 20 years to build. i'll have to agree to disagree thor, but i mean... the HOOOVER DAM took like 8 years. an automotive assembly plant doesnt take nearly 20 years to build. if you've ever seen or been in one, they are ginormous. really... plus all the machines and tools that go around the line and robots and stuff.... they're absolutely stunning. i think there may be some faulty reporting or maybe you read it as it's taken them 20 years to BEGIN building another one.

oh oh oh i see what you're saying. Not In My BackYard... NIMBY. yeah i guess but theres still SOOO much land in the US, they could build one if they thought it'd increase thier profits.

Yeah, your probably right. With all the stuff being made fast. I'm doubting about that 20 year thing too. Maybe with all the EPA and stuff slowing it down.
I'd like to know how much profit these bastrds who own the gas stations make. It's one thing about the pricing of oil per barrel, and another thing when it comes to how these people play with the pricing. There should be more federal oversight and regulations over gas station pricing..
Rules should cover things like
1) limiting the # of times prices can be increased in a 24 hour period
2) a cap on the % of inflation which can occur in a certain period of time
3) some kind of centralized method of administration where gas stations have to register their price changes or seek pre-approval
Something needs to be done, because the price of oil is high but there seems to be abuse of the system by these SOB owners of the gas stations.
Still trying to find oil leak on my Camaro, it’s a tough one. I think it is the oil pressure sender myself. Leaking when raving and going into boost....
