Usually I will come in here and ask for peoples opinions about certain situations that I find myself in, and this one is a good one. Not sure really how to proceed with this, but maybe someone can give me some insight.
In the last 4 years, I have been hit with a streak of bad luck. Medical bills piling up to a total of $25,000 for a condition no one can tell me how to cure or even treat correctly, jobs coming and going so fast because of this condition I don't even get time to have insurance to help with the current problems, cars breaking on me, people moving and getting married (good for them, bad for me), and on the verge of filing bankruptcy. In the last 10 months I have been working at a place called Southwire Company, basically what I do is work at one of 5 distribution centers in North America, supplying power wire, utility wire, and ROMEX to power companies, retail locations (most notably Home Depot), and doing specialized cuts of copper power wire. I drive a forklift as a material handler, picking orders for our customers, recieving products from our manufacturing facilites in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and California. Now usually as a material handler in Indianapolis, you aren't making more than $11.00 an hour driving a forklift and picking orders, but as we are in the commodities market, our pay is maxed out at $15.46 an hour, which is what I am currently making. As well as the decent pay for what I do, I get all the overtime I want, which recently, I have been working 50-60 hours a week, bringing home a net pay of around $680 weekly. Not much for some, but quite a bit for many. Im finally getting over alot of the bad luck, I have a car I have had for two years that is running well, making alot of money, paying off bills I haven't touched in two years or more, getting a bank account finally, and recently, applying for the IBEW in Chicago, which I will get into later. Although I make good money for what I do, I hate it. I am done picking this heavy wire all day, 12 hours a day. Its tedious, boring, and my body is in a constant state of pain. Now for future plans......
As I said earlier, I had applied for apprenticeship at the IBEW of Chicago back in June. After all the tests, and the driving 3 hours everytime to personally drop off paperwork on their schedule, I have been accepted into the IBEW. I have an orientation on the 16th of August for the new people entering into the apprenticeship. I am entering a course to be a Communications wireman, running low power wire, fiber optics, things of that nature for phone companies and other telecommunication corps. The apprenticeship last 5 years, and the pay will max out at $31.14 an hour after I recieve my journeymans card. Now after the info I have given all of you up to this point, I will now explain the predicament I find myself in.....
My dad had called me tonight wanting to get my social security number for an application. I thought, well, I don't want to work where he is working, because they are suffering, so I asked him where the application is for. He tells me that my uncle had brought home an application from where he works, Allison Transmissions. If any of you don't know exactly what Allison Transmission is, here is the link....... www.allisontransmission.com . Allison supplies alot of auto transmission for medium duty, heavy duty, and military vehicles. This is one of the FEW GM facilites still turning a significant profit even after certain plants are forcing retirement and laying off. Its is in all honesty a good career to have, and within the Indy metro area, probably the 2nd most desired place to work at, 2nd only to Eli Lilly Co. The opportunies here are amazing, discounts on GM products, some of the best insurance and benefits offered, so on and so on.
My problem is that I am not sure where to really go with myself. There are opportunities with both careers. With the IBEW, once I get a journeymans card, I could work ANYWHERE in the country, making the same money wherever I go, but there would be times that maybe I wouldn't have any work availiable, if I didn't get into the right places. With Allisons, I wouldn't have to move to Chicago, and I could WALK to work everyday ( I live about 500 yards from Allison Transmissions). Both offer great pay, great benefits, great opportunities. Im just not real sure where to go with any of this. I could potentially lose my relationship with my GF if I don't take the IBEW job, but I can't let a relationship decide which course is better for me. I am just not real sure where to go on this, maybe someone has had a similar experience with it, and could ideally help me out a little. Thanks for listening.
