I've read recently that they may bring back the Firebird instead of the GTO. Many designers of the next gen platform are hinting that they would rather design an all new Firebird than a GTO. Also, with the official news of the camaro, I think there will be a strong outcry for the firebird. I personally think the GTO is out of the picture. Hello Firebird! :)
Out of curiosity, do you remember where you read that? I'd like to read it myself.
I thought the entire reason they stopped making the Camaro and Firebird was because of poor sales...
If they re-design the goat to something more aggressive looking, and put the same time, effort and quality into the new one as the 04-06 Goat, you will be pleased they canned the bird. Hopefully the Camaro is built this well.
Sometimes we forget the goat was supposed to be a low production car in the first place...
That's what I thought too till I started talking to some of the Pontiac salespeople. Well back then what was selling the most were SUV's and Trucks(because of gas that's down now).
Sportscar suffered overall except for Corvettes and Mustang. Pontiac thought bringing back the name brand GTO would bring a following and it would do better than the Firebird.

Just check out the sales figures from 98 up. They weren't that good. They were shrinking every year. By 2001 it was pretty low. In 2002 they announced the end of the F-bodies and it spiked the sales. THAT is prob what dealers are talking about.
The problem about the GTO sales was the following you speak of, lol. People wouldn't accept its styling and therefore refused to give it a closer look. By '05 it was too late. It's really too bad too. Naysayers just have to take a drive to see how well built this car really is. Coming back out with an aggressive looking GTO will allow GM to have a nice Grand Touring car to pair up with the sporty Camaro. Don't plan on a 'Bird.
ive never ridden in or drove a gto. but i sat in one a few years back. and i can say without a doubt that it is a very well put together car. i was impressed with everything about it. the interior was the nicest ive seen from gm in along time. nothing looked cheap(like a certain fbody i know of)
i cant say ive heard many complaints from any of the gto owners ive talked to either.
current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it
My belief on the dropping sales during the 4th-gen's run was partially due to GM losing interest in marketing the cars to a segment they were no longer interested in selling to. Why sell a car in the mid 20K range when you could try forcing them to buy into the 30K market? So, GM gave us the Cavalier/Cobalt as a starter car to pull in young buyers, then saw the good money coming in from sales above $30,000. That was their plan, anyways.
As it turns out, sales of their performance cars took a beating after the demise of the F-body. The SSR is a publicity nightmare, and the GTO ticked off more people than it pulled in. The Corvette still flourishes, but it has a built-in following, and is the logical "next step" for many previous F-Body owners wishing to stay within the GM brand. In fact, if you quiz many Vette owners, they once owned an F-body.
GM took a gamble on shifting their target audience to a richer crowd, and it back-fired. They put all their research into up-scale cars like the Cadillac division, and are seeing very little return. Now, they are forced to go back and try to re-ignite the fire with a buying group they tried to walk away from.
Now, I like the new Camaro Concept, but does anybody else recognize it's lines from the earlier proposed '07 GTO concept GM unveiled over two years ago? Seems familiar to me. And, a way of removing a badge they see as a mistake while cajoling to a strong Camaro following.
These are just my opinions, but ones I strongly feel to be true.

In response to a previous statement by Mighty Thor: I don't believe the Mustang outsold the Camaro by huge amounts because it has a mass loyal following (although it does.) It outsold the f-bodies because people that weren't part of the loyal car-enthusiast crowd liked it better. Teenage girls go crazy for Mustangs (and that's mostly who I see driving the V6 models) but not so much for f-bodies.
The original Camaro was a hugely successful answer to the Mustang, why shouldn't this one try to follow the same formula?

let's just hope the same thing doesn't happen to the camaro as did the new gto
As long as some GM corporate pin head doesn't decide to get some divisional affiliate (who build crap cars to begin with) in some god forsaken country that could care less about automobiles to build an American Legend/Classic.
YOU IDIOTS IN GM READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS: Been there, done that, FAILED!!!!
Have they fired that pinhead dumb*** yet?

IMO the later second gen hurt sales (they sold a lot, but a lot of those people probably swore they would never buy anotherone), then the third gen killed them. If I owned a 3rd gen, I would never buy another fbody, or GM car for that matter, having not driven a 4th gen.
People generally now know that the 4th gens were pretty good cars, so in that respect I think the 5th gen has a chance, I don't know.
Personally though, for the money, I would take a used c5 over a new 5th gen fbody.
