Re: I've never seen so many homeless people.

I have been in san francisco for the past week and a half and here it's crazy, I am working and staying downtown near union square, (read very touristy) and I can't go 10 ft without getting asked for money, now mind you nobody has asked for food just money.
some have specific amounts, one old woman kept asking for $5, I was thinking to myself, DAMN you got high standards. Some just walk away when you say no and others get pissed.

it's funny this is on the board, I'm about to head out acutally and get something to eat, I will likely get hit up for money at least 20 times.

I would be more likely to give to somone with a sign saying that, they're being honest.

Then we went to the Public Library so my wife could checkout audiobooks because she likes to listen to them while driving to work. There were like 3 to 4 homeless people sitting on the corner staring at people that passes by and there's about 2 homeless people outside the library panhandling. Security had to ask them to leave.

I swear I have never seen so many homeless people. I practically grew up in my neighborhood. Corona, Calif. used to be a community for low-middle income people in the 80's. Rent was cheap, and houses were cheap. Back then you can buy a 3-bedroom house for 45k. There were no jobs in town though other than restaurants, gas stations and city jobs. You have to travel 30 miles west or east to get a decent paying job.

By the 90's a decent looking house was now 250-300k. Corona was becoming a bed-town community for people who work in Orange County and LA. People who were low-middle class were being pushed down to the barrios, which is where my wife and I are.

By the new millenia houses were up to 570-700k, some are even in the 1.2 mil category and they are only 4 to 5 bedroom houses with 2000-3000sqft. to them. Our rent went from 400/month in the late 90's to over 900/month to today and this is the 3rd cheapest apartments around in my town.

To top it all off, wages hasn't change. So I yeah, I see why there's a lot of homeless people in my neighborhood. I don't hesitant anymore to give them money if they ask me. What they do with my money is up to them. I just hope they don't smoke it or sniff it away. This weekend I'm donating a box of Ramen Noodles and Krotons (how I got a box of Krotons is beyong me) to the shelter.

Thousands apply for jobs at new Wal-Mart

          BY LESLIE BALDACCI Staff Reporter

Eighteen months after the Chicago City Council torpedoed a South Side Wal-Mart, 24,500 Chicagoans applied for 325 jobs at a Wal-Mart opening Friday in south suburban Evergreen Park, one block outside the city limits.

The new Wal-Mart at 2500 W. 95th is one block west of Western Avenue, the city boundary.

Of 25,000 job applicants, all but 500 listed Chicago addresses, said John Bisio, regional manager of public affairs for Wal-Mart.

"In our typical hiring process, you're pretty successful if you have 3,000 applicants," he said. "They were really crowing about 11,000 in Oakland, Calif., last year. So to get 25,000-plus applications and counting, I think is astonishing."

National unemployement was 5.1% according to Bush, that's just another lie.

you might think its another lie, its just that the economy is really spotty right now in certain parts of the country. MI is REAL bad with all the layoffs cuz of the auto industry. when the federal reserve is upping interest rates to cool off the economy then you know that its not bs. the federal reserve isn't really partial to either party, number one, and number two you cant raise interest rates on a slow economy. that'd only make things 10x worse. whats teh point in that? and you gotta keep in mind, the only people who are counted towards unemployment are those who collect unemployment. once your unemployment runs out, you're no longer counted.
