December 21 - The Mayan Calendar reaches the end of its Great Cycle at 11:11 universal time, the solstice. The Great Cycle is 5,125 years long, and began in 3114 BC. For the Mayans, the end of the cycle symbolized a rebirth into a new era. According to Jose Arguelles, on this date the New Age will begin.

A lot of Christian Fundamentalist say the Anti-Christ is coming soon. I mean we have war in numerous countries, natural disaster, Korea and Iran developing nuclear weapons, and the European Union.

Interestingly enough, after Pope Benedict, there's suppose to be one more Pope and then that's it. A monk 500 year ago had a vision of the the world would go through a turmoil and deep immorality. The spirit of the Anti-Christ would be alive and well (which is pretty where we are now). He wrote who the Popes were going to be and what lineage they would be and what would happen during their era. Through out the years he's been right, dead on.

This guy is really scary because he predicted the late Pope John Paul II attempted assasination, and how he relates to the moon and the sun, which got interpreted that he would be traveling a lot. Then he predicted that the next Pope would in line with the Benedictan order and what do you know. I read this 3 years before Pope John Paul's death. The Pope after him would be in line with Peter or he might call himself Pope Peter and it is predicted that this Pope would suffer greatly and he would be the last one.

But then again, who knows. Life goes on, right.

What is this? The haven for paranoid ramblings?? Jesus, people, get a grip! The world isn't going to end because some nut case in a robe said it will. And the world certainly won't end because a bunch of half naked heathens said it will either!

Remember when that comet ... can't remember its name... Hail Bop or something, flew past Earth?..and all those people committed suicide because they thought aliens were on the other side of it?? Yea, this is on par with that.

I tell ya, if the world IS going to end its going to be because a bunch of paranoid freaks will decide that "the end is nigh" and will blow us all up. What a laugh :spank:

No, no...that's not the point. The world does not end. Christianity never said that the world would come to an end, it's never ending. To what I understand, it goes into a deep turmoil and then renews itself.

Yeah, I remember that Comet thing. I think 28 people committed suicide by covering themselves with a black blanket. They did it in this guy's rich mansion. They were thinking that they could hitch a ride on the Comet as it passes earth. That's really nutty.

sounds about right.. thatll give the world what, 30 more years or so til we run out of oil and the global economy collapses until we find something else? cause lets face it, none of the rich people care enough to start switching away from oil. we wont have systems in place by then either, considering all the environmentalists cause it to take 20 yrs for a nuclear power plant or refinery to be built. i could see that being mistaken for a "dark time"

Nope. But the amount of new oil found every year is well known, and it's now less than the (also well known) amount of increased worldwide demand every year. So crunch time is coming. We don't have to run out. Once supplies start getting pushed hard, the price will go way up and destroy our economy, which is pretty much based on importing oil. I (old guy) probably won't live to see it. You probably will. You children certainly will. Your grandkids will be cursing us for our stupidity in not facing this problem (and also global warming).

"we wont have systems in place by then either, considering all the environmentalists cause it to take 20 yrs for a nuclear power plant or refinery to be built"

The environmentalists are not the problem. The problem is us. People want to blame a villain (environmentalists, politicians, the oil companies, etc.) for the problem of rising oil prices. That way, the solution is simple (find the bad guy and stop him) and _they_ won't have to do anything.

In reality solving the (huge) problem will require all of us to spend money and change our lifestyle. Few accept that, so it would be political suicide for our leaders to promote the changes we really need. Things are gonna have to get real bad first. Of course, solving it then will be much harder than if we started now.

Every generation thinks that the world will end when they are alive. I have heard a lot of interesting info about the 2012 prediction but honestly, I don't care. Just means I'm only six years away from standing infront of god. :)

I have seen several shows that say we are coming off a small ice age and that we are just naturally warming again in a normal cycle. We are just simply increasing it extremely slightly, almost not enough to even have a reason to say something. Many also say that we are coming around to a natural cycle of increased hurricanes so we should expect more but it is nothing we have caused.

Flat wrong. A thing is happening about global warming. Some people are saying things that are unscientific and/or distorted, and get published in the media. In the scientific community, the debate is over. 99+% of scientists agree. The planet is warming, we are a major contributor. The arguments now are over how bad it will get and how fast.

The National Academy of Science is a pretty definitive source for this kind of "controversy". Very conservative about coming to conclusions were the science is at all in doubt.

Here's a good article about what I just said by a history of science scholar who studied this deal. Relevant quote:

"Not a single paper in a large sample of peer-reviewed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003 refuted the consensus position, summarized by the National Academy of Sciences, that "most of the observed warming of the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations."

                                http://www.twincities.com/mld/twinci...l/15166461.htm

Here's the full NAS report online. As I said, it's a very conservative take, but it's definite that global warming is real and that a major cause is us. They specifically address the "Little Ice Age" argument.

                                http://www.nap.edu/catalog/11676.html

But it won't happen until after 2012. :-)
