Were getting an extra new used car. We only want to spend around $5k, no more. What car should we get?
I was thinking maybe a Saturn since they get good gas mileage.
Or a Nissan since it is the most maintenance-free vehicle today.

It is definately gonna be our DD so DD is the only thing that matters!
    thnx

    Re: new used car

a friend of mine is a certified saturn mechanic, he told me he'd never buy a saturn..

I agree, saturns dont seem to be all that reliable i suppose... I would go with some sort of chevy sedan... or even a nissan like you said.

honestly, (i really hope this doesnt get me banned), engineers run toyota. not designers. toyota really has some of the most reliable cars, tho i HATE the interior styling. the chevy prizm and toyota corrola are the same thing. pontiac vibe also shares a platform w/ toyota (but you'll wind up calling it the vibrator), and honda civics are really reliable cars. obviously our 3800 is a beast, the straight 6's in the old cherokees and the newer wranglers (i think) is awesome. a 4.3L GM v-6 is based on a 3800 and they live forever too.

        Re: new used car

A used Honda civic or Toyota Corolla should fit the bill...
Honda Civic Coupe HX will get you 40mpg and the DX sedan and Hatchbacks will get around 36/37mpg. Toyota Corolla will get around 37mpg. Toyotas can handle a lot of maintenance neglect and still perform well. Honda's aren't quite as resilient to lack of maintenance as the Toyotas, but they are a little more performance orientated (engine/transmission/and suspension).

The Chevrolet Prism is a rebadged Toyota Corolla and the Pontiac Vibe is a rebadged Toyota Matrix...

Who says Nissans are the most maintenance free?

How much is a Honda Civic HX for a 2002? or a DX or Hatchback? what about a 2002 Toyota Corolla? Around 30k-70k miles.

The woman wouldnt listen to me. She said we were just looking today. She ends up buying a 2001 Ford Escape on the spot. I told her we'll come back monday and do some Consumer Reports research on all our choices. I told her we should get the blue book values. I said we should try to haggle on something. I hate people that just buy without researching!

olds alero... not a total crap looking car and I saw a few like 99-01s for sale for like $4k. with like 50k miles on them.

basically a grand am, just better looking.

not super reliable, but what car under $5k really is "that reliable" And if you pick up a car with a "reliable" reputation, for that much it will likely have 100k or more.

Oh, 2002 models won't be under $5,000 - more like around $8,000 to $10,000 I was thinking more along the lines of a '97-'99 models for $4000 to $5000.

Ah the Ford Escape; a FWD 2.0L 4 cylinder little SUV that gets around 18mpg around town and 24mpg on the highway. I feel for you man... LOL
