F1 cars are considerably slower than an Indy car, but handle 10000x better, and are FAR more sophisticated, and expensive, machines.

Michael Schumacher is probably not ARGUABLY the best driver in the world, he is UNANIMOUSLY the best driver in the world. I can't think of a driver in modern day motorsports that is better than him, and only A.j. Foyt and Mario Andretti come to mind when it comes to all-time best drivers.

i would say modern day has more competition, challenge, and just all around advanced, so therefore: I would think that todays drivers are better. I'm sure that if the old practiced with the new, they could become just as good. Sorry, just my humble opinion

modern day drivers also have more technology to assist them

^^ Quoted for a rediculous amount of truth. while i like watching nascar sometime, when it comes to admiring talent, theres no question F1 guys are just.. better. i love watching them go from like 150-50 mph coming into a corner and then its 50-200 in like 5 seconds coming out. if michael were reading this, i'd just say great job and congratulations and thank you for all the years of enjoyment you've given us watching you drive.

eh... kinda... to an extent it helps them, but it makes them have to drive that much harder. take ABS for example. invented for indy cars to prevent flat spots on the tires from skidding on slicks. that means they can brake faster, but it also means that they're coming into turns alot faster because they're relying on that technology. then you're dealing with a much smaller magin for error. I think that while the technology makes the cars run faster laps and handle better, it doesnt make the job of driving the car to its limit any easier.

                        Re: Michael Schumacher

i could argue that he wasnt the best driver ever... he was indeed one of the very best, but come on.. he raced his entire career in a league where only 4-6 guys are competitive and have a shot at winning a race every time out. if he would have gotten stuck in a minardi (or something similar) he could not have won all those races. did he have to be rediculously good to make some of those cars handle? of course. does he hold basically every major record that matters in F1? yup! but just cause he holds records in the most technological series out there doesnt mean that someone in a lesser technology bases series is a worse driver. I'd make a case that rally racers are far better drivers than F1, as they race on all surfaces, in all weathers, on roads that htey barely know and are sometimes inches wider than their car.

sucks he is retiring. I don't really think any of us have the right to question just how good he is when non of us could even come close. How can you honestly judge someone one something you don't understand.
