watchin the news, a story comes on about a 16 year old girl from around my area in okla. she meets this old pervert off the internet. they talk for a month or so. finally he convinces her to come see him, he lives in ohio, i think it was. he tells her shes beautiful, hot, that he'll take care of her and so on and so on. she hops a bus to ohio, but somehow the cops find out about the whole ordeal and get to her first before she makes it and becomes a statistic. i have no sympathy for her. she is 16. she knows better. she is old enough to know this is stupid and not to believe everything she see's/hears. especially on the internet. just makes me sick that their are girls out their that fall prey to perverted old men. WAKE THE **** UP ALL YOU 15, 16, AND 17 YEAR OLD GIRLS!!!!

idiots, i have no sympathy for them. they know better, especially considering all the warnings about internet perverts and **** you hear on the news EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMN NIGHT!!

Agreed. There was a caller on Dr. Drew last night who was 25, and was worried for his friend. This "friend" was apparently a 15 year old girl... a 15 year old girl that hangs out with 25 year olds.. Anyway, the reason he called was because the 15 year old told him that all she wanted for her B-day was "him". Dr. Drew told him to get this girl professional help, and rightly so. Kinda sad, that this happens... I know theres a psycho-analytical reason for this, their daddies never loved them or something, but seriously: Some people are just dumb. Just plain dumb.

Common sense went out when the media and society starting doing all the thinking for the individual.

Do i feel sorry for those girls? Yes. Do I have any sympathy? No, they should know better honestly, i could see it happening to a little 8 year old, maybe even a 12 year old, but once you're in your teens, you have the ability and responsibility to make decisions.

These girls may not necessarily be stupid, just very naive. If a girl is neglected, lonely, craving attention, whatever, she may believe any internet pervert is her damn soulmate if she isn't educated properly about what happens with these things. You'd be surprised how manipulative some of these people can be. No 16-year-old meeting someone that she talked to online is looking to get hurt. If these girls SHOULD know better, but DON'T, whose fault is it? The responsibility and blame can't all be left on the child. Yes, 16-year-olds are children. If you don't know the difference between a 16-year old and an adult, you're probably (A) still a teenager or (B) haven't grown up sufficiently to know the difference.

As a society, we shouldn't be so quick to condemn the innocent (but ignorant and naive) victims of this kind of thing. We should work to educate EVERYONE about this type of crime and try to catch the perverts.

settle down here. we all remember how awkward the teen years were, especially right around 14-15... sexuality is starting to play a bigger part of life, and theres all that tension and awkwardness... i can totally see it happening. I remember that like it was just a few years ago (oh yeah... it was!) i didnt listen to my parents at all, i didnt listen to anyone. i smoked tobacco and otherwise, i got into trouble alot, got arrested once, drank, and had sex. I didnt think of the consequences really... isnt that what teens DO? the rebel! they dont listen! thats why this **** happens! its kinda like being mad at your dog when he ate the burger you left sitting on a low table! sometimes animals and people dont think to do stuff... they just do it. you say :"no" to any 3 year old, and what do they do? "WHY NOT!!!" problem is, they dont grow outta that till after high school. yeah, the girl didnt make the right decision, but no, she's still too young to realize the full consequences of her actions necessarily. The parents are the ones you should blame if you really feel like pointing fingers. Parents should know what their kids are up to... thats what they're there for!

Theres so many things it coulda been. Everyone has made good points.

It doesnt just happen to girls, as a male teen, I go to chat rooms, and some of the crap that is said and Pvt. Messaged is very wild, its crazy what some people say.

It is up to the person talking to the "impersonator" to tell the difference from real and not, but how can they tell whats real and what isnt, if they havnt had anyone to teach them what the difference is. Sure, theres a lot of kids that have the common sence (Those that we dont hear about, because they get out of those bad situations), and sure, theres some kids that dont have that common sence (Those that you do hear about, because the most severe stuff happens to them).

Its also somewhat the parents fault. As everyone says "The computer should be in an area where the most time is spent by the whole family" becuase, this should keep the kid out of the stuff on the internet they shouldnt be in, and I can speak this of personal experience, as my computer is in my room.

There is so many things that "Could" be done to prevent most of this kinda stuff happening, but if no one is going to take the leap to stop it, guess what, its not going to stop any time soon.

I don't think it's necessarily the computer location in the home that's the whole problem: today kids will find ways to acess computers regardless of location in the home. You're right though, parents are partially to blame, but not (IMO) because of giving their kids too much private computer access. If parents paid enough attention to their kids to realize something wrong like this was going on, they could catch it before it gets out of control.

Steps need to be taken to educate adults and kids about the nature of this crime and what to do to prevent it. It probably will never be completely stopped, but that shouldn't keep society from trying.
