        Re: new computer!

        he prolly built it himself.

I have done the same, on all of my PC builds, and it is a good way to save money, and get exactly what you want.

              Re: new computer!

Building a computer when you really look into it doesn't save a whole ton of money. You definitely get exactly what you want though. and the way you want it to look. Few years back i built this computer.

              3.8GHz P4
              1.5GB ram
              p4p800-e deluxe motherboard
              nVidia 6600 256MB vid
              dvd/dvd/cdrw
              7.1 24-bit surround sound
              gigabyte LAN

              1200ish

but it's not the specs that make this computer so cool, it's all the blue lights and fans, clear case, and black and silver theme all around. Plus the powersource and cpu heatsink is mucho better than anything that would come with just about any computer bought in a package.

Dell and compaq and hp have some pretty cheap stuff, making it questionable how much you save building your own, but it's still more fun to build it and it will still be better... plus compaq, hp, dell suck

yeah... how DID you only pay 300? he was showing me the site, it retailed at like 700 and then he threw in the 6600 video card.

                  Re: new computer!

Im not much of a fan of Gateway, Dell, or Compaq, but I have had this HP for almost 5 years. Its old enough to still require the use of RDRAM, but I will never get rid of this comp. I bought it in June of 2001, about two weeks after I registered for this board, and thru all the 5 years, I still love this comp.

Since 2005, I have updated the graphics card (just yesterday), went from 128mb ram to one full gig, new keyboard and mouse, and got rid of that dreaded ME crap for XP Pro. Want to get a TV tuner card, new LARGE flat panel monitor, an external HD, and a new DVD-RW. This computer is a little outdated with the internal devices, but as long as the MB still functions properly, I have no reason to go buy anything else, and if I did, it sure wouldn't be a PC, probably be one built up Mac Pro.

BTW, I think that HP you got will serve you well for years to come. There are some people who don't put any faith in package PC's, but with 5 years on this comp, I have no complaints, and I doubt you will either if you keep up on it.

                    Re: new computer!

initially building your own might not be alot cheaper than buying a pre-built...but, how often do you need a new HD, case, cd/dvd burner, psu....cost me 300$ to upgrade..and now Im at amd 64x2 3800+ w/1gb corsair 3200 on a geforce 7600 gs..sata hd/dvd burner...and all sitting inside a huge antec server case.....but..Ive had the case for 5 years now...so thats 200$ I only spent once...oh ya and 500w antec HE psu......its the bomb and it did'nt cost me much (for upgrades at least)...

My friend has a gateway media center pc...he's bought a new soundcard+vid card + ram....well, he only has 2 pci slots that already a nic and tv tuner...so no upgrade for him....which sucks....oh ya, and Im also running xp MCE

lemme ask a question of you guys. teh compter came stock with an ATI integrated into the motherboard running shared memory. The kid added in the 6600 in the only PCI express slotand turned off the integral card. My question is, in the future, can i run another vid card in the normal PCI slots or is there any way to add more PCI express?

if theres only one pci-e slot, thats all you'll be able to run...so if your asking if you can run an sli setup no...I havent seen an sli card that is just regular pci...so your done with your current setup....now you can always swap the gfx card in the pci-e slot to a better one...the 6600 is starting to be an older gpu...just upgrading to a 7 series might help you alot...depending on what you use it for.

                            Re: new computer!

mainly i'll be using it for graphics design like solidworks or autodesk. It'll run halflife 2 and CS source without any hitches now... its just i know the more intricate the parts i design the slower it'll go. i just dont wanna be held up when i'm trying to design parts or anything... sooner or later i'll get a beast together. i'm jsut excited cuz this is the first computer i've gotten in 5 years, and back then my dad dropped almost $1700 for a P4 1.7Ghz rig with a G-force 1 and 512mb of RD ram (tip of the cap to mogobs ;) ) and a sound card.

You can get a quad-core graphics card of dual core, which is in a sense SLI, but with the use of one PCI-x16 slot. I am assuming it's x16?
