Let's say I break into your house...

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!! It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors; I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family's insurance plan, educate my kids, and provide other benefits to me and to my family (my husband will do your yard work because he too is hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part) If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be there. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm hard-working and honest, um, except for well, you know.

And what a deal it is for me!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an anti-housebreaker.

Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me.

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America....

If you don't like this post then blow it off along with your future Social Security funds.

that editorial possibly could've offended someone, and thus MUST be ignored, as that is the way of the wantonly malicious anti-american pukes who feel there should be no true U.S.A. borders, language, or culture.

It makes a lot of sense. BUT!!!

Who you should really be targeting are the Employers who hire them.

They are the ones undermining our wages, our benefits, and our way of life. They are the ones that screwed up the middle working class. Now we got subdivision within the middle class: lower middle class (where I am), middle middle class, and upper middle class.

People are people and it's human nature to survive and to have a better life. Just like our foreparents came to this country is the same reason why they are coming over here.

If Mexico had all the goods that we have here now, I would be living over there.

**** yeah baby wooooieee!! [while national anthem is playing in background]

I'm so tired of people comparing today, to the colonial era. You know what else they did in the colonial era? They took land, they killed natives, and they stole all the goods from the people here. Its not back then, its now. When our 'foreparents' came over here, there was not already a nation, with a national government, with a set of regulations and laws, there were no citizenship policies at first, its a joke. Its not a good comparison. This country is not just starting out still.

A great percentage of people did not come to this country during the colonial era. Most of them came by ship or plane. My grandfather came here right before WWII from Spain, they called him Mexican anyway. He met my grandmother in the Philippines when he was fighting against the Jap.

If you think of colonial era, they came here by force. Today, they come here for labor.

Re: Let's say I break into your house...

The reply about blaming 'employers' is very close to what I think is a major problem, now and in the future.
first: we know it is not '12 million people' but more like double or triple that. Look around...all neighborhoods have 'hard, dirty jobs...'

A proven lack of assimulation is the biggest concern. As for economy...much of the money earned goes out of country. Did you know that Mexico has VERY HARSH penalties against illegal immigration and trespassing? Try coming up from central or south armerica. Many of those people get stuck in mexico as the lowest of the lower class. They are for the most part (central and south america) a higher quality people with better education and a much more peaceful disposition. They seem to like the USA and it's citizens and it makes me proud when they call it there home. The only feeling I get (for the most part) from those with fake identification coming from mexico is that this is a place to park their honda.

(side note): talking trash about mexico...or any country is not racism. Mexico (for example) is not a race of people but a country. Now, Mexico has racism...you better believe it. We have racism as well. It is an ugly thing to say the least, but I think slavery is far worse...because with racism it may just be an inner feeling for what ever dark reason and it may not ever cause harm to another person. On the other hand, slavery has direct repercussions on the enslaved as well as the slave owner.

Have we not learned our lesson yet? WE MUST hold employers accountable becuase they can not police themselves. They must compete or die. It is a no win situation if outside control and influence is not in place. By outside control I mean laws.
Business compete with one another. get the picture? Look at all the small business that 'start up'...oooh, wow...lets all bow down to the 'growing economy...' it is because of slave labor that many business pop up in redundancy...and that can be bad because of overcompition. for instance...
There may be 3 or even 4 large commercial bakeries that serve a greater metropolitan area. They compete with each other and they provide products as well as jobs. Then along comes mr. enterprising small business dude...who wants to take his specialty bakery to a new level. He needs employees....there are none becuase the normal population in the metropolitan area is already tapped....well...he can use slaves. His new employees are given just enough money in wages so that he can stay in business...and compete with the bigger bakeries. Wow, it works...so along comes mr. enterprising small business dude number two...if number 1 can do it...so can I! Number 2 goes out and hires some slaves. Well...now there are 5 large commercial bakeries in the metropolitan area...guess what the first three bakeries have to do? first they start by holding back normal wage increases. Drivers, loaders, bakers... all those jobs begin to sink lower and lower as far as wages and benifits. It's ok, though...because many of the english speaking workers dvance (over time) to middle management and enjoy a better standard of living by existing on the top of a pyramid of slaves. disgusting. The city and county like it because more warehouses are built...tax bases increase for politicians, etc.

When does it stop? Too much too fast is rarely a good thing.

We can't rely on business to police themselves in this matter. It is not because they are 'bad' but rather because they are stuck in a 'cold war' of labor and cost.

Too fully condone the exploitation of these people in the name of a 'growing economy' is slavery.

The cooks in my restaraunt were making $11 an hour (non lead...basic qualified line cook) SIXTEEN years ago. Today they start at 10 bucks an hour, they can't read the tickets so expect to wait if you are allergic to garlic or give your waiter any type of special instruction becuase we will be cooking it twice...and why should the cook care? He is busting his *** all night long for only 10 or 11 bucks an hour and he doesn't even get a break. My restaraunt has little choice in the matter, however becuase they must compete with all the other restaraunts....many of which should not even be in business, though, becuase the natural population growth in the area would not normaly support so many restaraunts...oh, yea...the slaves.

That's why I believe it's important to crack down on those employers who hire them. If no employers were hiring illegals and playing by the rules and paying people their fair wage, this wouldn't be a problem.

Cooks make more money than I do. There was Hotels protest here at LAX yesterday because the workers say they weren't being paid enough. This is because the hotels were hiring illegals and not paying legal American their fair wage.
