Ok, for instance, tht STUPID 350Z!! How the hell did they get 300HP out of a 3.5 liter while chevy gets 305 out of a 5.7liter! And our 3.8 liters barely push 200?? It bugs me, ha. Seems like all the new engines are just better technology, discuss

Re: New Cars, better engines!??
the same way a 3800 is reated 200 hp /225 torque, and an LG4 (v8 peeps) is rated 170 hp/250 tq. Technology. ALso the same way those 3.9/3.5 v6's are putting out some good numbers.1978 Formula 461 in progress of being built

Re: New Cars, better engines!??
you also have to remember that the 3.8 you are running was designed at the latest 94 and slightly tweeked along the way. thats freaking old. Ls1's are old motors too. you can't compare old to new

Re: New Cars, better engines!??
you're not taking torque into account. Comparing two motors, one bigger, one much smaller with the same hp rating, chances are the bigger motor will have a LOT more torque. Also, the LS1 is underrated at 305 (in LS1 Z28s). Look at the four-cylinder in the S2000...little motor pushing 240 hp, but it doesn't respond well to mods because it's been milked for almost all it's worth at the factory.
EDIT: As an example, take the 2006 350Z: 300 hp and 260 lbs. ft. The LS1 makes 305 hp (at least, probably more in the range of 350) and is rated at 350 lbs ft. That's a difference of 90 lbs ft. That's a lot of torque!!!Last edited by Camarorulz; 09-30-2006, 07:47 PM.-Eric
2002 Navy Blue Camaro...Striped and Stalled. 35th Anniversary SS wheels
Best ET: 15.384 @ 88.32 on street tires
Project Whitney: Goal, 14.0 1/4 by summer 2008.

Re: New Cars, better engines!??
The VQ35DE has an aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with VVT, optimizes opening of intake valves and features forged steel connecting rods, a microfinished one-piece cast camshaft, and Nissan's nylon intake manifold technology. It has low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons. The intake System is a high-flow tuned induction system.
^^ from wikipedia. i'm sure the rabbit hole goes deeper, but we all know that an engine has to be balanced, and with the newer technology, its easier to find that with computer modeling. they are getting to the point where they dont necessarily have to do crash tests anymore cuz the modeling is so accurate. the only thing i dont understand is why GM likes pushrods so much... even the LS7 is a pushrod if i'm not mistaken..2000 3.8L Camaro A4 Pewter Y87
K&N Filter, SLP Ram Air kit, Eibach Pro Kit, Flowmaster 80 series, Silverstars, NGK plugs and MSD Super Conductor Wires, Electric Water Pump
