Catholicism is actually the first Christian church established by Peter. They are the ones that put together the Bible in the 3rd ce during the council of Hippo. Constantine called the Christians Catholics because the church became universal in its acceptance of people from all culture. Back then Christianity was exclusively for coverted Jews but Paul changed that in a drastic way.
Protestant didn't come in the picture till like 15 ce. Each Protestant denomination had different founders. The Bible lost 7 books (Apachraphal=greek writings)and words were changed.
That's why when I was going back Christianity I wanted to know all the different denomination and I found out that Catholism is not a denomination at all but a historical church that's been around for over 2000 years.
That cracker is called a waffer. Bread with no yeast.
Thor, you sound like you know your stuff. But are you positive about this history of the Catholic church? I always thought the original Christian church was the Orthodox, and a portion eventually split off due to some conflict of belief, thus forming the Catholic church. I think the Pope apologized or something to the Orthodox church a few years ago for the splitting of the churches, at least I heard something like that. They have been wanting to merge the Catholic and Orthodox churches, but there are soe unique differences especially where the Virgin Mary is concerned.

think thats all that matters is that you have a relationship
Every christian and baptist church i've gone to just had cheap saltine crackers and grape juice.
I saw on the FBI.gov website that 2 catholic priests stole over $8 million from the church and now are in prison
(probably getting treated like an alter boy LMAO )

The Marian belief and practice are the same for both Orthodox and Catholics, only their veneration of saints are different. Back Christians went a the Church. It wasn't called Catholic or Orthodox, it was called the Church (instead of Synagoues), because it was the name Jesus gave it when he spoke to Peter. But titles were given to it in the 3rd Ce. But all denomination are called the Church.
Early Christian split off into 3 Greek Orthodox, Roman, and Aryan or Arian. Aryans were the minority and they don't believe in the Divinity of Christ, they didn't last very long. Orthodox Christian split off because of doctrinal disagreement and mostly because of cultural pride. Greeks hates the Romans because of their bad history together so the split was going to happen anyway. But pretty much they are the same. Today they are working together and most differences have been settle. Same thing goes to Anglican in England who slit from the Catholics because Henry the 8th but since there are gay bishops and such they haven't jumped in.
Rome became the vehicle for Christianity that spread all over Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia. Orthodox spread more eastward into the Bulkans and Russia.
I once considered myself to be an Atheist. I now consider myself to be Agnostic. It makes no more sense to me to profess to believe in a God than it does to profess that no God exists --
As I grow older, and perhaps more wise (one can only hope), I am beginning to realize that there is an absurdly gigantic gap between what we as mankind believe we know and what we actually do. I now realize that the sum total of what we as humans actually know amounts to absolutely nothing, and I have little faith in what our "mightiest minds" mandate as truth.
I'm not sure when it happened. Maybe it was in my late 20s. I just woke up one morning and realized how incredibly naive we are as a species and as individuals.
And as a result of this change in perception, I've denounced my former Atheism and admitted that I just don't know. I see things in nature that astound me. Everywhere I look, I see evidence of order and purpose that mocks any attempt I may make to deny what I see, but what the source of that order and purpose is, I don't know. I also believe that I never will. I also wish that I did.
And yes, I must always post a novel in response to any thread that interests me. :)

It depends on the translation. Word ("The Word") is true, people are not always-men study the universe, but did not create it. B4 we go off too much in a tangent. Yes, things like this should be studied logicly and such not blindly, because when someone reads a book they may not get the same out of it as someone else-or may not even be understanding it properly. Also there are different translations of the Bible so that is a factor also.
actually its not crackers, its bread without yeast.
To each his own. I do not push my beliefs onto others, which is one of the great things about believing what I believe. But as "The Word" being true, I cannot corroborate that with evidence in any way. I don't know whether it is true or not, and NO ONE telling me its true is going to change my mind, ever. I want physical, undeniable, hard proof, not someones belief. As for different translations, if it is all BS to me, a different translation isn't going to make a difference. Read Genesis thru the eyes of a Atheist, Agnostic, Deist, Trancendentalist, and you will understand why Genesis looks as though it was written by a teen looking for a decent grade from a high school English Lit teacher. Ive seen better literature in a childrens book, like Curious George.
I can agree with Infernal to an extent, him being Agnostic, it has led him to ask questions as to our existence. But where I differ from him is that my belief in a god, and ONLY god. My belief leads me in the direction to believe that god didn't create the physical world everyone sees around them, like grass, cars, the sun. I believe his creation is more on a intangible level, like feelings, emotion, a soul, things like that. My beliefs also lead me to believe that we will find out the true secrets of god, thru science and many thousands of years of evolution.
I think alot of people associate with faith and religion out of fear, fear of not believing in the bible and the god associated with it, fear of what may become of them after their time is up in this mortal realm. It is fear that drives these people to do horrible things in the name of faith. All in all, I cannot tell people what to believe, I can only tell them to find truth within themselves, by using what we have to use. We will not have all the answers right now, only time will give us these answers, not a book written MANY years ago.

This is probably the most intelligent thing I have read on this board. My stance is exactly the same as yours and has been for many years. We are stupid to think we know everything when in reality, we know very little.

Oh yes about the "True" part i meant assuming you believe in the bible in the first place. Thats why you ask questions and not just dismiss. I often tell friends to ask where/when did Christmas, Holloween, or ne other traditions they follow started. Obejtively read the Bible, other books, encyclopedias by people who already asked, "what is the historical basis and factuality of this book". Some people just read the verse that says, "believe in me and you shall be saved" then they say ok and close the book
I know my understanding of things is limited and thus dont rely on it and my own knowledge to figure out things of grander nature, such as this.
Yes people use the scaring tactic, "your guna burn! etc...etc."

being a christian, i would like to give some reference to the previous statements (not trying to push anybody to believe anything...just trying to clear a few things up ;)). alright, first off, the reason christians believe in god is a simple matter of faith...its faith in our god, thats the bottom line.
second, you addressed the truths of the bible, well there are many truths in the bible, for instance...you believe in evolution i take it? well why exactly do you believe in evolution? is it because a science book told you so? you believe in that science book to give you an accurate answer because it does for everything else, so why not this matter as well? the bible has yet to make one error in the way of scientific truths or historical truths...you may have seen on a television show some scientific evidence that may seem to disband a truth in the bible, but i can assure you that the scientific evidence will err before the bible ever does. therefore we as christians do use this as evidence to support the belief that there is a god, just as many people today use a science book to reaffirm their belief in evolution.
and lastly, you claimed that only time will give us answers, not some book wrote "MANY years ago". consider this, this "book" has foretold scientific data thousands of years before scientists could ever back any of it up...and i believe that to deny such a historically, scientifically, and morally accurate book is utter lunacy (no pun intended ;))

I don't want to get into a heated debate here. But this smacks of radicalism. First and foremost, many theologists will tell you not to take anything in the bible as fact because facts have been altered through time. The best example, told to me by a priest, is the story of Eve and the apple. In truth, it was some other fruit (a fig or something). But it was altered because nobody knew what a fig was. Many many instances of such "facts" were changed over hundreds of generations and translations. Taking anything as fact is just plain wrong - not my opinion, what I have been told.
The bible is a book. Just a book. Written by man - wrougt with man's flaws. I am not belittling the significance of the book - just the "scientifically accurate" statement.
Science books can be believed because the facts have been proven by reproducable experiments. I am a scientist. I publish nothing until the data I have is rock solid. I believe anything from a science book long before I would anything from the bible.
*No offense meant to anyone. I know this is a hot topic, but those radical statements were way out there. I push my beliefs on no-one and expect the same treatment. :)
Science has somethings that contradict itself. Lets take into consideration the Big Bang theory and the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy. The Big Bang theory states that at one point in time, all the matter in the universe was all contained inside of a volume that was less than the very tip of a pencil. The Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy states that Matter cannot be created nor destroyed. ok, now according to recent science text, an atom's diameter is .1 nanometers(which is 1 / 10 billionths of a meter). Sure 10 billion is a lot, but nothing compared to the number of atoms in the universe. And I'm sure if you counted all the atoms in the universe, and calculated the lowest amount of volume that they could be compressed to(even nucleus against nucleus), I'm sure it would be much bigger than the tip of a pencil. Plain and simple, the reason I believe in God is: You cannot create something from nothing.
