  • Oil Weight

I need a technical question answered but I think the Lounge is the fastest place to get the answer.

What is the oil weight that is recommeded for your car?

I need your year and oil weight.

    For example:

    1996 is 10W30

    Thanks

                Re: Oil Weight

i run 10w-30 in the summer and 5w-30 in the winter to make sure the motor gets lube right away with the cold weather. i think lighter oils can mean more hp if i'm not mistaken. i know the stuff those F1 guys use is pretty much like water... i just dont know how well it lubes compared to thicker stuff.

I completely agree with you on everything!
But I always thought FI guys run thicker... like 15w-50 or something
(viper runs that) I too would run thicker oil on FI, so that it would give
me more oil pressure and protect my precious little bearings!!!
I havent spent much time on researching FI though, so I could definately be wrong

                      Re: Oil Weight

                      So it looks like:

                      3.4 5W30
                      3.8 10W30
                      LT1 5W30
                      LS1 5W30

Any guess as to why our 3.8L needs a heavier weight?

no no no. F1, as in Formula 1... v-8's revving to 25,000 rpm. not FI, as in forced induction.

Honestly, I think our 3.8L cars are suppose to run 5w30 but it allows 10w30 if the weather conditions are within certain specs.

My oil cap says 10W30, but my local dealer was going to put 5W30 in until I stopped them. (long story)

                              Re: Oil Weight

GM Service Information recommends what ever it says in your owners manual. but if you dig deep enough, it does say i think for a 01 or 02, which ever i looked up...lol, that it takes 5w30 unless temps stay over 0*F then you can use 10w30.

They were probably going to put in 5w30 cause they most likely use 5w30 as their bulk oil.
