  • Question about computer repair...

I got a laptop from my mom, it's a dell.
The laptop is 3 years old but hasnt been used in well over 1.5 years.

i guess the cooling fan wasnt big enough to cool the computer, and the processor or motherboard got excessively hot and fried itself.

so its still a really good computer just needs to replace that, i asked my new roomate ( computer nerd ) if it was worth fixing, and he said to replace the motherboard would cost, probably $1,000.

how can it cost that much, there are people around here that build whole computers for 500+.

Is it just cuz it's a laptop?

Do you think i should take it, and fix it or just forget about it.

    The computer was $2,500 new.
and still in perfect condition, cosmetically.

how much would u think it would cost to fix?

    Re: Question about computer repair...

to start, a 3 year old computer of any type will not be worth anywhere close to 2,500. Depending on the specs of it, it may be worth to fix for 1,000.

The reason lap top motherboards are so spendy is because EVERYTHING is integrated. The only thing you would really be keeping is the harddrive, possilby ram, and the keyboard and monitor.

Chances are, if the motherboard fried, it probably fried the RAM and CPU. I would just forget about it, it's not worth it.

^^ yup. ususally people build desktops cuz they're easier and cheaper. As already stated, on laptops, everythings integrated into the mother board so you're screwed

well, im not screwed, but that does suck.

I got it for free, and it was such a nice laptop, its a shame to see it go to sh!t.

Oh well.. I guess ill buy a desktop in the near future, my laptop blows.

Right. And also another reason for expensive parts is alot of laptop technology is proprietary, unlike desktops with interchangable parts. Usually m/b, memory and sometimes even hard drives are custom designed for a particular manufacturer or line of laptop. This adds to the price. Just buy a new laptop. They're pretty cheap and you can get a good one for under $1000 nowadays.
