  • Encounters Psychological Disorders

Using the appropriate measures to protect identity, please respond to what clinical diagnosed psychological disorders have you all encountered in your life experiences. Short explanations of your encounters with these individuals would be greatly appreciated, I would like to get a feel for how people regard those with diagnosed disorders. Thank you all in advance, your responses are as always greatly appreciated ; )
BTW: mods if this isn't appropriate I apologize in advance, please delete it if so, I am only doing this as research for a paper. Thanks

    Re: Encounters Psychological Disorders

My uncle is a hermit that will NEVER leave his house (he'll walk out the door to smoke though). He pays people to get groceries and has my Mom fly out from Seattle to LA to handle his bank account and bills (the funny part is he's well off financially because he saves and never spends). He still lives in the house his parents owned and died in. He let the house deteriorate and my parents had to work hard at convincing my uncle to let them renovate the house before it got condemned by the city and auctioned off. He made up some story about the house being a sacred landmark to try and prevent us from fixing the place up.

When he wakes up in the morning he does some weird routine in his chair where he throws invisible salt over his shoulder and he does a series of finger snaps and arm motions for "the gods" or whatever he believes in. He orders everything he wants at the grocery store in 5's..... 5 loafs of bread, 5 packs of cigarettes, 5 packs of pepsi, etc. We bought him a pool table and he's more fascinated by arranging the balls in a special way than actually playing normal 8 ball. He believes he can predict winning numbers so I call him up from time to time to make him feel important and I ask him what horses will win a race or what the winning lotto numbers will be

He was an A student through highschool then drafted to Vietnam. He never talks about his time there but I think it had a major effect on him. When he came back he slowly started withdrawing from mainstream life.

My guesses: Post Traumatic Stress disorder, OCD, Schizophrenia

Well, I could write you a book, but I'll spare you. I have a close relative that is schizophrenic. Most (aka, almost all) of the entire family has shunned this person (from fear, ignorance, and/or stupidity). My experiences have been largely positive. On good days, this person is normal and you would have trouble even noticing there is a problem. This person is exceptionally smart. On bad days (which are very infrequent), well, the bad days are very tough. But you suck it up and deal.

When visiting this person in the hospital, I have come across all sorts of mentally ill people. Their BIGGEST problem - loneliness. Families and friends all disappear. When I show up, everyone wants to chat with me. The nurses tell me how wonderful it is that I visit because most of the patients lack visitors.

My experiences are long and complex. If you have more detailed questions, e-mail me.
