  • Taking risks...

My girlfriend and i got into an argument tonight...

she hates the fact that i ride motorcycles, she says they are so risky im going to kill myself.

Well my side of the argument was, you take risk driving cars too.. everyday!
There are alot more car crashes then motorcycle accidents, Of course cuz there are many many more cars then bikes, but look how bad car crashes can be!

I said there are millions of people everyday riding motorcycles that don't die... she just points out the worst

She thinks if you get on your automatically signed up to die, and I said its alot about riders skill, you cant just be an idiot at all times or you will die.. but an experienced rider knows the steps to take to minimize risks and ride safely.

So i said fine, if your going to be so mad at me about this tonight, I wont go out and ill stay home.. Hoping that would shut her up, and she got even more mad.

    Errrrr I get sooo frustrated!

What are all your opinions on taking risks everyday, driving, riding, whatever.
    ?

I know were all not motorcycle riders but I am in the profession, and this is what I do... and shes being a total b!tch about this.

    /Rant.

    Re: Taking risks...

Sometimes you just have to respect the opinion. My mom is the same way (father somewhat, but he had his bike lisences when he met my mom)

Mom wont let me get my lisence becuase she says they are so risky. I dont even bother arguing yet (Because I have less then a year and ill get my class 6 anyways).

Maybe try to get her involved, or, take a MSF course http://www.msf-usa.org/

show her what kind of enjoyment you get out of it, show her that it is only risky if you dont know what your doing, or trying to push your limits.

Sure, you can die riding a motorcycle, but I can just as easily be killed walking to the grocery store (Dont bring that point up though, thats never a good one)

it is pretty dangerous. being on a motorcycle compared to in a car, you're risked factor is probably a heck of a lot higher of being seriously injured since your out in the open. in a car, you're most likely not actually going to be crushed by the other vehicle, shot along the pavement for many many feet, so on and so on. A lot of things can happen in a car but i say its a lot more dangerous on a bike

yeah, you can get hurt more easily on a motorcycle, but i know they've got some pretty decent safety equipment. jackets filled with gel that hardens on impact are one thing. yeah, its not 100% safe, but then again nothing is... But it can be very safe if you just use your head and treat it as you would a gun or a knife... with respect and care.

I think bike accident and plane crashes have a lot in common. For one they sure are less frequent than car accidents, but when it does happen.......

I have taken MSF, the basic, and the advanced riders course.... I have also been riding for 5 Years +

Some people are just so scared of motorcycles they cant look at them without thinking only terrible things.

Like said before, you have just as much risk driving a car, or walking to the store, or doing anything else at that, just use your head.

            & when i ride, i always wear a helmet, sometimes a jacket.

I would love to get a bike but I know I like to push the envelope so much that it wouldn't be long before I was a statistic. Then again you only live once so... no fears no regrets just know that when it's all over you did it the way you wanted and not the way someone else wanted you to because all the matters in the end is yourself no one else. Well there's my deep statement for the week, good to get that over with now.

                          Re: Taking risks...

I lucked out. My g/f likes my bike. Her parents hate it of course but, they let her ride with me. In the chance you may get into an accident on a bike, yes, its more probable that you'd get hurt, but cmon, we just gonna live our lives like a bunch of whiny scared pu$$ies just fearing the worst? You might as well not fly anywhere either if thats the case. You better sell your F-bodies and go buy Volvo's also. It's cool if you don't want to risk it, but don't try and convince us that its dangerous.

Just use your head and be safe. You sound like you got a good head on your shoulders when it comes to the bike. One thing I do suggest though is that you wear a jacket all of the time, instead of "sometimes". I've got a mesh jacket for hot days and regular one for cooler days. Same with gloves. It's def worth the investment and maybe your g/f will chill out a bit seeing the effort you are taking to be safer.

How long have you been dating this girl? She's going to have to learn to deal with the bike, I wouldn't sacrifice it for her, in risk of sounding like a d*ck even though that isn't my point.

i've seen a motorcycle crash, nothing bad, the 2 dudes riding just got right back up and took off
I almost saw a moto wreck today. The guy did a bad as$s fishtail and almost lost it but it was probably worth it.
