The devil is most certainly not a mythical figure to those catholics that take their religion seriously. No less offensive than Hitler. This is like what Prince Harry did last year on Halloween. Everyone got all uperty... its ridiculous. I think nowadays everones out to look for an excuse to get offended.

The simple matter of is did the school set down a set of ground rules against this sort of thing? I.E. Did they say: "you may dress in costume, but it has to be tasteful" of "nothing offensive". Cuz obviously some people would be very offended by that. If they didn't... well then its fair game and they've got no right in suspending him.

[EDIT]Oh and just cuz you've got a jewish gf, doesn't mean you feel you should be offended :p Personally i would have loved to have seen it, especially if it was convincing.

All I was trying to point out is the the devil is based on a belief that he existed. Hitler most certainly did, in fact, exist. BIG difference.

Like it was stated, his parents were cool with it, and he knows his background... that's his "devil". Just like if an African-American chose to dress as a KKK member... that's his devil.

i think that people need to stop thinking in terms of procedure, and laws (freedom of speech, etc) and just think about being respectful. did he have a right to wear it? sure! ****, he could have worn a shirt that said "hitler had the right idea", but the point is that he shouldnt have. its a matter of being respectful to other peoples beliefs.

there is a HUGE difference between saying that the bible isnt true, and bringing up memories of this extreme oppression, and murder. i have been to auschwitz, i have been to dachau, i have been to the eagles nest. i saw the tears of my jewish friends when they saw the gas chambers, and the barbed wire. after seeing that, i would never think about doing something of this sort.
im a firm believer in people doing whatever the hell they want. i drive a car that gets sh!tty gas mileage, despite my liberal, tree hugging mom. i could be respectful of her beliefs, but its not worth it to me.
but when we are talking about an issue that made one of my friends throw up before even walking through the gates of auschwitz, people need to show some compassion!


edit: and mogobs- hitler was trying to kill all non-aryans. it had very little to do with him having something against jews. they were just the embodiment of his "crusade".

ok look. as far as the gov't goes they can have no beef because of freedom of speech. If the school was public then he shouldn't have been suspended. He might have been asked to change, but definately not punished.

That aside, like steve says: theres a clear lack of respect there. Shame on the parents for allowing him to do that.

And for you mogobs, i know that Hitler killed 6 million people, but as a serious catholic, we believe that there IS a "devil" named Satan who provokes evil in the world, and that those people who choose to follow Satan and his ways will be forever damned to the fires of hell. ETERNAL damnation sounds a lil worse than just dying.. to me at least. Sounds a little mystical, maybe a lil fruity but if you wanna get down to it, yes, I could be just as offended at people dressing up as the devil. Just wanted to point out that Dachau was an internment camp for "enemies of state" (splitting hairs here :p), not for "ethnic cleansing".

Anyway, it was poor judgement on the kids part to dress up as such. Anyone with half a brain could figure out that people would be offended, but i have to agree with Camaro Dom (and myself), whether or not he should have been suspended has everything to do with the rules of the school and nothing to do with offending people.

Actually, I never read anywhere that Hitler killed anyone (I could be wrong, but I've studied WWI & WWII). Hitler only orchestrated it. Just like the Devil.

The kid dressing up as Hitler was a bad idea, as others stated before unless his family is oblivious to the world (which they aren't) they would know it would make people mad. Also, you have to look at the fact that most people in ths country whether it offends them or not are gonna ***** about it b/c they can and they have nothing better to do. I believe everyone involved is out of control. I mean one kid dressing as Hitler is not gonna end the world, however, when others get ahold of the idea it could do some serious damage.
