"Been to Iraq. Seen the goat f**k. I've been saying since 2003 this is like Vietnam. we live in base camps, go out, take ground, and give it back. Instead of jungles, urban areas. Instead of VC, we have the Muj. It did not have to be this way. If we would have gone in in force, instead of thinking once we ousted Saddam, all the different groups there would sit down and sing kumbaya together, this mission wouldn't have drifted into the chaos that it has. Not only should Rumsfeld go, but Bush shoud be out the door two steps in front of him. He's the Commander in Chief. In the military, a commander reaps the rewards for success, or takes reponsibility for failure. By the way, I am a life-long Republican. I hated Clinton, almost got out while he was President. As a republican, I think Bush has set our party back 50 years."

Good post. Criticism of the Bush administration is definitely more credible coming from the military brass. A lot of these guys seem to want to wait to retire before criticizing, due to feelings of duty and loyalty no doubt.

Without addressing the reasons for going into Iraq, the operation itself has definitely not been handled right; Bush has been saying since the beginning that he goes with what advice the generals give him, but whenever they said that many more troops were necessary, that advice went unheeded.

We didn't accomplish all our goals in Afghanistan (bin Laden is still at large) and Iraq is a mess. It is far from certain that our goal of democracy-building in Iraq is even possible, so even approximating when that goal might be accomplished is impossible.

The conservative mouthpieces on Fox have often asked the question of dissenting liberals: "do you want to win the war, or do you want us to fail?" What they don't understand is that the question is invalid, because most of the dissenters agree that the war is unwinnable, so desire to win is irrelevant.

BTW: Rumsfeld will be Secretary of Defense until the end of Bush's presidency: Bush announced it a couple of days ago and everyone ignored it because of the stupid Kerry comment.

no, there are rules against it while in the service, that's why they all wait untill they retire/separate.

I always thought you as a Liberal Democrat. You supported abortion and all that Democrats supported. You were in full support of Kerry. Didn't you and I butted heads during Presidential run.

          LOL

That is a quote from USMC1stSgtRetire on the second link.

But, I had called myself a Republican up until Bush Jr second run. The party needs a wake-up call. Like the Sgt I think Bush has set the party back. What is happening today was predicted by long time Republicans back in 2004, that if Bush won re-election he would not have any thing to check his neocon view and would cost the Republican party dearly. We'll see Nov 8.

^^^ I think that statement is correct.

As far as foreign policy goes, it is easily argued that Bush has gone far beyond being a neo-con, now his views on foreign policy have been dubbed the "Bush Doctrine" because his views go so far beyond what most mainstream politicians ever envisioned before.

I think you're letting the neo-cons off the hook. They heartily support the "Bush Doctrine", it's exactly what they wanted. But they're deserting Bush himself, because they think it's his incompetence is what has set their cause back. Unfortunately, they may be right about that.
